first main: It's Just His Hometown - 07/22/08 09:09 AM
Today's post comes from the NRVLiving Real Estate Group's very own Steve Ayers, a Blacksburg Townie and Food Afficionado of some  kind.  I've been bugging him for a year to bring us something here on the blog, and we've finally found a topic that's near and dear to his stomach - err, heart.  Welcome, Steve!

South Main Street in Blacksburg ... A covered canopy with rows of speakers that you pulled into to order treats.
Ice Cream, Milkshakes, Fresh fries, Buddy Boys, with a side of Friends.
If you remember these, you remember Lendy's.

first main: The High Cost of Elitism - 07/14/08 05:30 AM
Full disclosure - I'm a Blacksburg resident, have been since 2001.  Now that's out of the way.
Excellent op-ed in Sunday's Roanoke Times regarding the high cost of elitism.  My favorite line (emphasis mine):
"The costs came in the forms of economic stagnation, limited job opportunities, underfunding for the social infrastructure of bridges, roads and schools, and high property taxes."
Hat tip to New River Journal - he's got several good links there regarding the First & Main debate.

first main: Is The Third Suit A Charm? - 07/10/08 12:35 AM
It was only a matter of time, I think, until we saw this one added to the mix.  According to the Roanoke Times, this is the third suit filed so far regarding Blacksburg's First & Main Development.
On Wednesday, attorneys for Fairmount Properties filed an appeal to last month's Blacksburg Town Council's vote against the installation of a Sonic Drive-In restaurant at the new First & Main development on South Main Street.  Some quotes from the article:"The council has in the recent past approved similar special-use permits for other restaurants, including a Wendy's across the street from the site of the … (2 comments)

Kudos to The Roanoke Times Blog for jumping all over this ...
I understand they have to go through the due process, but I'm VERY interested to see how the rule on this Special Use Permit given what else they've shot down.

first main: It's All Starting To Come Together - 05/28/08 04:27 PM
The tenant mix is beginning to be formalized publicly ...With all the publicity that's come from a project like this (we Blacksburg-ians can sure get worked up, huh?), what's your take on First & Main?  Is this something you're going to utilize, or because of the way the Big Box issue has been handled will you just stay away?  Leave a comment, let us know what you think!

first main: Do You Have Cooties? - 05/08/08 02:19 AM
Regardless of where you stand on the BURG vs. First & Main debate going on in Blacksburg, I thought a post on a local blog, "Think, Christiansburg!", did a good job of looking at a broader picture - what are we doing to our region when we consider "development".
Do I agree with every point in the article?  No, but  the point made in the third paragraph hits the nail on the head - empty storefronts add no quality or value to an area.  Regardless, our elected leaders seem to be negligent at helping to find creative ways to combat … (0 comments)
