A Bit of San Diego History: The Cabrillo National Monument

A couple years ago, I wrote a post about this statue that is on the peak of Cabrillo Monument National Park. The day was clear at the park and not too many people around ( thus the nice unobstructed photo) but you can see off in the distance the haze was pretty thick. When I had first read about this statues history, I thought it so fascinating that I wrote an abbreviated version of the story. As I thought about it, I went back and read my post and there … (29 comments)

cabrillo national monument: New Photos Taken at the Cabrillo National Monument - 11/27/11 01:13 PM
Cabrillo National Monument Views

While visiting the Cabrillo National Monument yesterday, This lofty bird entertained many on lookers as it swooped along the coastline. A stunning example of the species, this bird and its red tail, which is actually a pale shade of reddish brown, adds yet another Raptor to the collection, The Redtail Hawk.

The day provided some stunning views. The islands off the coast where shrouded in with a foggy mist that was reminescent of the Fuji islands. Bluish purple surrounded with the white fog with only the tips showing through.

The San Diego Bay was … (15 comments)

If you Were 156 Years Old Today, You Would be Beaming Too!

The San Diego Lighthouse, A San Diego Treasure

The building turned 156 years old today and to celebrate the milestone, the San Diego Lighthouse at the Cabrillo National Monument Park has now opened the lighthouse for guided tours. The docents of the park that are leading the tours will be found in period costumes of the time. They will guide you up the very steep circular staircase where you will see first hand the work and living quarters of the lighthouse keeper whose average work week was … (21 comments)

The San Diego Lighthouse

The San Diego Lighthouse is Located at the extreme southwest end of the Point Loma penninsula just past the Cabrillo National Monument and National Cemetary. This point of land used to be called Pelican Point prior to the erection of the lighthouse. These is web site link here that tells some of that story about these two important and … (24 comments)

cabrillo national monument: The Big Guns of San Diego During WWII | History of San Diego - 06/06/10 03:23 AM
The Big Guns of San Diego During WWII - I was watching a Ken Kramer's show "About San Diego" on KPBS and one of the features was about the 19th Coast Artillery at Point Loma Rosecrans and the part they played during WWII. He went on to talk about the remnants that still remain along the cliff side near Cabrillo National Monument and the Lighthouse.

I had been to Cabrillo to take photos of the lighthouse and I noticed when I went down on the back side of the lighthouse to get a photo looking up, I came across what … (37 comments)

cabrillo national monument: The Cabrillo Monument National Park and the Statue of Cabrillo, An Interesting Tale - 08/06/08 11:23 AM
I had the opportunity recently to discover something about San Diego I didn't know and found it interesting to share with you. Having been to our wonderful Cabrillo Monument National Park on the tip of Point Loma numerous times, I discovered there among the many other interesting aspects of the park and the famous lighthouse, the amazing views of the coastline, especially looking back to the San Diego Downtown Skyline. When you enter the park you would naturally also encounter the Cabrillo National Monument at the Visitor's Center. There is quite an interesting  story here about the monument itself. I recently read a fascinating … (16 comments)
