Whatever happened to self-discipline? Have you ever said something you regretted and said to yourself, “You did not say that, did you?” I have. The cross words, the gossip, the colorful language, the accusations and the painful words have crossed the abyss from my mind to my tongue and out my mouth. This has caused me regret. I have also reflected at the end of a day and recognized some of my best decisions were to refrain from speaking. The moments I held my tongue, refrained from criticizing another and simply listened or walked away have been among my wisest decisions. I must admit I do not respect politicians who call reporters, “Idiot.” There is a much better way to challenge another one without calling him or her a name. Even when you are shown disrespect, you need not respond with actions of disrespect. Our society needs more folks who show respect in the face of disrespect. Too many cheer on and welcome crass behavior. This does not make sense to me. Whether facing conflict, expressing an opinion or stating beliefs, practice self-discipline. A practice which has helped me immensely is to state my viewpoints with “I” statements, not “you” statements. I believe. I feel. I expect. This requires me to accept responsibility for myself, my beliefs, my feelings and my opinions. You have made it through your inspection contingency and have now removed it from the contract. The home has appraised and you are simply waiting for the clear to close from the mortgage company. Nothing can go wrong, right? If you assume that nothing can go wrong, you have assumed something which is inaccurate. You do not want to do anything which may negatively impact your credit, nor do you want to quit your job. Recently, I am aware of a client who was a buyer of a home for sale in Lancaster, PA. This client decided to quit her job. This all transpired right before settlement. The mortgage company called the employer to confirm employment and the employer responded, “No!” Without this woman’s employment the couple could qualify for the mortgage. Fortunately, this woman convinced her employer to take her back and eventually this dilemma was positively resolved. Even if the mortgage company had not received the information regarding this woman’s employment, there is a form at settlement which the buyer needs to sign. This form asks if there has been any change in employment. If the buyer lies, the buyer is most likely guilty of fraud.
