Marketing Your Business

Safeguard Inspection Services, Inc.

This post was prompted after reading Jeromes post on Coupons and I felt I may be able to offer a different perspective on this.

Well there's coupons and there's coupons, and then there's coupons that are a GREAT marketing tool that you can use that'll not only generate additional business but do it by utilizing your EXISTING resources instead of having to rely on an outside source such a realtor, broker, or banker.  It's called a referral marketing coupon

Here's how it works.  Make up 3 coupons using any program you like.  Send them out to all your PAST home inspection clients, 3 coupons each.  These folks are already happy with your services and now they'll have even more motivation to tell their freinds, relatives, co-workers etc about you.  They fill their name out on the check and give their house-hunting freind one of their referral rewards checks to hand in when they book their home inspection with you.

This accomplishes 3 very important things.  It rewards your existing customers, keeps you in their presence and brings in new customers.  Here's an example of one of my checks to give you an idea.

You can use any program you like to create this, I used Microsoft Publisher for this one and it was very easy to do. And you can design it anyway you like and for any dollar amount you wish.

Now I wish I could take credit for this ingenious idea, but that credit goes to a home inspector/marketing expert by the name of Russel Ray.  He's a member of NACHI and also owns an excellent marketing forum where you can log in to join and learn all sorts of neat other tips to help you grow your business.  And he's even available live on certain days of the week for your convenience.

This type of program works very well for not only home inspectors but also for realtors and many other real estate professionals.

I do something similar to your coupon checks. I send coupons out to my existing tax clients and if they refer a real estate client to me they receive 1 hour off their tax preparation for the next year. It has generated a few referrals already.

Good Post DJ. I also use the Referral Rewards coupon, RR is a great teacher and is highly regarded.

Matt - What kind of insurance are you talking about?  I know a lawyer who hands out a get out of jail free card...lol

Thanks for all the comments folks and write back to update your results if you decide to implement a program like this.  It's always nice to know how things work out.

Bob, I can only guess, so my best guess is that it's not as offensive to you cause it's more like giving back rather than giving out.  But hey, this is just one of a million ways to market.  A good rule is just to do what works best for you.  But providing a realtor with a coupon to hand out can also have it's benefits.  There's a ton of reputable business's out there that give out coupons to hook the customer, and it for the most part works cause you gotta admit, most EVERYONE likes a deal.

If you're in a licensed state check your laws before doing this. The way I read W. Va. law I would be barred from anything like this.

Hi James,

I'm guessing you're talking about a "kick-back, which yes is illegal in most all licensed states.  But the law is talking about paying a kickback to a realtor for steering business your way.  The Referral Rewards Program is nothing like that since you're not paying a realtor anything for a referral.  With this program you're only rewarding your CLIENTS for the referral.  Way different and most definatly legal.

I've been trying to find the file on my computer but it basically says that an inspector may not give any kind of incentive or compensation to anyone involved in the real estate transaction. The law is not even a year old yet so none of this has been tested or challenged. My take is that the client is involved in the transaction so it would be a violation to give an incentive. Maybe I'm reading this too literally but I don't want to be the first test case.

Matt-

An insurance angle might be a "gas card" for an auto insurance client  or a coupon to a home improvement store if it is a homeowner's insurance.  I think in NY we cant go higher than 15 dollars so i'm not sure about your state.  I havent tried this but i will look into it.  Let me know how it works if you try.

Try out http://www.varcose.com/. They offer travel packages that allow you to send clients or anyone you choose on cruises, resort stays and include recreation certificats and gas cards.

I have had amazing success by using travel as an incentive and asking like this.

This is what I tell every closed client as well as all potential clients: "If you or anyone you know is looking to refinance or purchase a home I am never too busy for your personal referrals............ Oh by the way if you do know of anyone who would appreciate the same great level of customer service would it be ok if I were to send you on a 7 day cruise for two to the Grand Bahamas?"

You wouldn't believe how fast people start throwing out names and numbers.

Shoot me an e-mail if you would like to know how it works and how to implement an amazing marketing tool.

From a mortgage broker standpoint, this is a great idea. I think I am going to try coupons for reimbursing appraisals at closing. It's just one more thing that makes you stand out.

Thanks,

Amanda

In Florida we cannot do this, it is compensating a non licensed person so we are barred from doing anything like this.

You can also send a gift card for a particular store be it Lowes, Home Depot, Dunkin Donuts or just a Visa or MC gift card.

Good post DJ .... nice to see RR's ideas working for us.
