Crumbling Deal Due to Drywall made in China

By
Real Estate Agent with Remax Services

This morning I received a call from my inspector, who brought to my attention that there have been several problems in newer construction communities in South Florida due to drywall imported from China.

Of course this was cause for alarm, because I have a closing in one week on a home built in 2006. AHHHH, what do you do at this point?

We'll first the inspector and I decided it would be a good idea if he went back out to the home and looked for symptoms caused by this particular drywall. In the meantime I phoned the buyers and explained the situation.

We have not come to a conclusion at this point as to how the situation will be handled, but I wanted to make all other Realtors aware of this problem.

Please take the time to read this recent article in the wall street journal titled: CHINESE DRYWALL CITED IN BUILDING WOES

And I understand that people are starting to put Chinese made cabinets in their homes and offices too...

I can't wait till that OSB starts giving off fumes!

Low bid does not always save money!

Buy North American!

You are definitely correct, I really can't believe this is happening.

I wonder if this is an issue in Arizone as well, because they had a similiar boom as we did here in Florida.

I saw this on the news the other night.  Apparently the drywall puts out fumes (sulfuric acid) and colors your copper wiring black.

What is it with the Chinese manufactorers and poison?  Poisoned milk, drywall, toothpaste, dental implants with lead in them, dogfood, and lead in paint on our kids toys....  Are they trying to save money or kill us?

Who knows what's going on.

I think the companys that buy from China need to do extensive testing on the products.

Absolutely Stephanie.  In our area a community called Cobblestone Creek is all up in arms as all of the drywall was bought from China, and they fear the worst in regards to defective drywall.  People paid upwards of $700,000 for these homes a couple years ago.
