Earth Hour, is set to take place on Saturday March 28th from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, when more than 2,000 cities around the globe will observe Earth Hour. In Ontario, the Provincial Government several municipalities and many corporations and individuals will participate by turning off lights to reduce energy consumption and green house gas emissions.

You can help by turning off lights and computers before leaving the office today for the weekend. You can also help by turning off everything you can at home for one hour on Saturday. While this may only be a symbolic gesture to some it heralds a new mindset on energy conservation to others.

Every Kilowatt Counts

For energy conservation tips and information on grants and incentives to save energy visit the Every Kilowat Counts web site.

Electric Personality

There is even a section where children can check out their electric personality. The Kids Corner of the site is a great interactive site with games, videos and other information for kids to learn about electricity and electricity conservation.

The Earth In Your Hand

I will be participating, and hopefully, longer than 1 hour. If the weather tomorrow is as nice as it was today, we will be going for a very long walk.

We are pretty good in general. Usually we only have the lights on in the room where we happen to be, however, tomorrow and from now on, we will try harder (especially with the computers, etc.).

Sylvie - Your Welcome - Barrie charts our hydro consumption and is amazed at how much we consume. He found that when our daughter and family moved out our consumption dropped by almost 30%. So far changing our lights to the energy saving ones has not made a significant difference. Perhaps that is because in our high use areas we use dimmer switches and sensor lights that the bulbs aren't designed to work in so

Kathy, the south is not usually very Green. Having Nashville participate is really a big step for us. The hockey game was moved to 5:30 so they could finish in time. Jo Dee Messina and several others will be performing downtown on Broadway to get people to come out and see the city go dark. Very exciting!

Connie - We listen to a Toronto radio station and they have been talking it up all day this morning they were talking with a local hotel who will be going to candles for the hour. There are performing events all over to occupy your time during the hour.

We track ours too Kathy and it's amazing what difference every resident in a house makes. We are super diligent around here and even had an eco Energy audit recently. Our household has shrunk by only one person yet we've reduced our electricity consumption by about 40% and our water a whopping 75%! John and I spent our Earth Hour chatting by candlelight about more ideas for home green plan. There are so many things we can do and the cumulative effect is encouraging.
