What a Day!!

Yesterday was a very long, but exciting day.  Boyd(my hubby) and I got up at 5:00 am to begin our day.  You see, it was Boyd's birthday as well as the 100th birthday of his aunt who lives in Fairfax, SC.  There was to be a "surprise" party for his aunt at mid-day.

Before we could head out to Fairfax,SC, we needed to go to Manning, SC for our regular office meeting with the Manning, Santee & Wyboo agent/owners. So we traveled from Manning to Fairfax --- the route was very interesting, very warm and just delightful.

Once we got off of Hwy 95, we traveled 2 lane roads through the country --- true country side.  We went through Reevesville, Branchville (both very, very small towns) and then thru Bamberg (slightly larger town). As we went through Bamberg, we were on Main Street --- what a sad sight --- 98% of the stores were closed. Then we hit Sycamore, SC and then Fairfax.

Boyd & I both are from small country towns --- Boyd from Fairfax and I was 12 miles out in the country from Estill, SC.  So, we both thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the fields and tree farms along the way. Saw 2 different herds of
goats --- cows ---- horses ---- hogs -----

didn't see any deer or chickens --- that was disappointing, but how delightful to be there absorbing all of this. Boyd's family owned a lot of farm land in the Fairfax area while he was growing up -- as a matter of fact, he was very involved with the farm. So what a thrill for Boyd to show me all the different fields and where the tractor shed used to be, etc.!

As I try to describe the feeling that we shared as we drove through these country communities and on these country roads, I'm really at a loss to adequately describe.  It was a sense of security, a sense of belonging, a sense of "Wow, this still exists" and just at peace.

Then we arrived at the party to find our 100 year aunt sitting on the porch -- we were not the first to arrive, so she already knew about the party.  She absolutely looks wonderful --- no one would ever in a million years guess that she is 100. She is attractive and seemed to really enjoy all of the family and the attention that was shown to her. The way she looked and acted, she will be with us for many more years.  How refreshing to see such a wide range of ages at the party -- so many came to show their respect  -- how nice that her son and daughter-in-law did this for her before she dies instead of after!

Boyd and I felt refreshed as we were leaving there.

Then we took another route home -- through different country roads.

As Boyd said, "How nice, to travel back in time --- it seems like we are back in the 50's again." My only regret for yesterday is that I forgot to take my camera.

To top off the day, for Boyd's birthday, I cooked a fried shrimp dinner for our whole family.

Thank you SC for your beauty.

Liz- Sounds like a great day.  My sister taught school in Estill for a couple of years and lived in Hampton.  Didn't realize you were from Estill!!!  I still remember driving from Orangeburg through the country roads to Hampton to visit my sister.  I also remember eating catfish stew at a little restaurant in Estill.  That drive was so beautiful, I loved it.  Ray and I love to take off driving on country roads.
