Never Be Afraid to Try Different Things

When I was a kid, brussel spouts were the worst vegetable you could put on my plate.  They tasted bitter, mushy and awful.  I would do my best to eat as many as I could, but it was not an easy task.  And since becoming an adult, I'd managed to stay away from that particular veggie.

About two months ago I was in a local supermarket.  They had a brussel sprout dish that was very visually appealing in their prepared food case.  I boldly went out on a limb and asked for a sample.  YUM!  This was not the way I remembered brussel sprouts.  They pleased my palette.  Couldn't believe it!

Since then, I've eaten them about once a week.  Every time I am delighted.  But had I not stepped outside my own memories, I would not know that brussel sprouts are acually quite tasty.

It never hurts to try something new.  Or to try something you previously disliked.  You might surprise yourself.

Chris Ann - I don't like brussel spouts either and I am not eating them today.  Did you get the recipe or how did they cook the brussel spouts?

Chris Ann:  As you said... you boldly went out on a limb... tried something new... and yikes... brussel sprouts are now yummy.  Such courage in the face of such painful memories.  You Go, Girl !

Sharon:  Cut them in half and pan fry them for a few minutes, then oven roast them.  Olive oil, salt and pepper is all I put in the pan.  The store used bacon too.  Everthing is better with bacon.

Trey:  I don't know why I suddenly like them, but I do.  I was getting really tired of broccoli.

Karen Anne:  I guess I didn't realize just how much our palette changes as we get older.

Martha:  I must be honest, I have no idea what you are talking about.  If Randy is right and it's from Green Eggs and Ham, I'll have refresh myself on the book.

Randy:  Glad I tried them again.  I'm not usually very adventurous with my food.

Chris Ann...

Nice photo! I love Brussels sprouts, and they were always a favorite of my daughter. I still prepare them for her every time she comes home.

But you're right, we need to try new things. I had a friend who would never touch sushi and now he's "hooked!"

It's amazing how our tastes seem to change over time. I too am a firm believer in trying new things.

Richard:  I'm like your friend with sushi.  Refused to try.  Once I did, I didn't understand why I had waited so long.  Thanks for the feature and the compliment on the photo.

JL:  Same goes for house hunting.  I always end up with buyers who are absolutely adamant against certain things.  When they "try them on" they often change their minds.

I also toss some crushed red pepper flakes and fresh grated parmasen cheese right at the end, otherwise I do the same recipe.  That's the only way Keith will eat them and he actually asks for them.  Never ate brussels sprouts before until I did it that way.

Oh Chris you're tempting me.  I too am a non-fan.  I remember the very pungent odor that drifted through the elementary school cafeteria and hallways and that alone turned me off to them.  My mom and husband would be shocked if I gave them a try...thanks.

Ginger:  What torture!  The schools used to serve them.  I would have starved.
