Mom, only seven more years!

In Conway, MO today was the last day of school. As of 1:05 pm today, my kids had "officially" declared themselves one grade level older - our son is now a second grader, our daughter a fifth grader.

As I went through the final papers, the stack of art projects and the final report card, I couldn't help but feel a little sad. Not to worry, said my daughter as she patted my shoulder. "In only seven more years I'll be in college!"

What?!

Only... seven... more...

Okay, okay, I get it... only seven more years....

Both my kids thought that was a pretty cool observation. I didn't find it so "cool."

As the busy summer selling season begins, I am reminded the kids are growing as quick as the weeds in the flower garden. Now is the time to feed the fish, go swimming, read a good book, count the cows, go shopping, play with moon sand, go see a Disney movie...

If the next seven years go by as quickly as the last seven, I'm in big trouble. This Mom isn't ready for these "official" days to be over...

I know what you mean, Debbie!  My 2 are also three years apart...my son will be a 9th grader and my daughter will be a senior!  College is less than 18 months away for us!!!!  But...but...but she was just a baby YESTERDAY!!!  <sniff-sniff>  Cherish these next 7 years...they will FLY by!

While you aren't ready, your job is to do what you clearly are doing -- help her be ready.  I know this -- the complete 'freedom' is a myth.  Which is wonderful.  They just reach the next stage of their lives, but they officially belong to us.

Sue - You're so right - it seems like just yesterday I was waiting for the day of no more diapers! I couldn't wait until my kids could talk, and now, sometimes they can't keep quiet! Great memories!

Kelly - Thanks for the kind words. I have confidence my daughter will be ready to take on the world - I'll be the basket case! I talk to my Mom almost every day. Even at 38 years old, I know I'm still her little girl!
