You Can't Always Win But I Had Some Fun With A Couple of ActiveRainer's Anyway!

By
Real Estate Agent with Better Homes and Gardens Rand Realty

Well, I had a booth at another Bridal Show this Sunday and learned that you have to be careful about the promoter and the show.  The show we set up at yesterday was definitely not what I was used to from the other shows I had attended.  This one was rescheduled from a snow day in February but I don't think that was the reason for the poor set up and attendance at all,  I just think this promoter was not doing her job.  There was no fashion show, as advertised, no live band as promoted, there were in fact very few wedding specific booths.  Needless to say there was some print ad promotion and it was on the Internet but the promoter did not provide incentives for the public or apparently the wedding professionals who work in this market area to attend.  I think she was like many real estate professionals who sit around waiting for the phone to ring and she was depending on the excitement of the word wedding to get people to come out.  We all need to help stir things up to get people to seek us out.  We can't sit back and wait for them to come with a few tried and true old school methods.  We need to offer more.

Waiting Game

Perhaps if the Bridal Show promoter had found some exciting prizes to get people to come out or really made more effort to replace the fashion show vendor who had dropped out she would have been able to deliver some live bodies to the show but alas we only saw about 4 or 5 couples and most of them left quickly.  Let me tell you the mood of the vendors was lethal.  We sat for several hours and then finally she came around (I think after hearing the grumblings and ideas on how to report her to someone as a scam) and offered us a free booth at her next event. Like I might waste another Sunday on this type of show.  But at least she tried.  Oh well live and learn!

There was one highlight to the afternoon.  I got to meet two ActiveRain members from PA who were there promoting their new home and re - sales in nearby Pike County, PA.  I had "met" Renee Hoover through my blog and have actually started one referral with her.  I was also pleased to meet her Broker/Builder Ed Nikles of  Ed Nikles Custom Builder, Inc. / Nikles Realty, Inc.  It is so nice to meet people who are Active Rain members and we had plenty of time to chat.  I hope to do more business with them in the future.  You see we are only one half hour apart even though they are in a different state.  I often have buyers who decide to drive the extra distance to PA and I am happy to have found someone who I can work with out there.  AR is great for getting us to know others who can help us out.

Anyway, each disappointment is a lesson that helps us to do better next time.  The promoter promised an email with 50 preregistered brides that did not show up so we will wait to see that one and hopefully it will happen. I am not giving up on this outreach but rather will be better able to judge which shows to become involved with.

Paddy,  Like you, I hate to waste my time.  It's a shame it wasn't better promoted, but I'm glad you  made two new friends!

Yes otherwise it would have been a total bust!  Every thing that happens teaches us something though

Paddy...

A lot of times these things are a shot in the dark, but I have found that lately, attendance is down even at well-promoted events, so I think that the economy may be partly to blame as well!

I would believe that except I did a Bridal Show on Wednesday that was packed and one other attendee said she did one on Friday that was also packed.  They are still getting married.  Thanks for the tought Richard and I agree for the most part people are not spending.

There is no telling how some events will turn out, all thought when I went to see about aniPhone, I had to take a number and waited for about thirty minutes until I could talk to a sales person. There are some things that are being attended well.

I've gotten a lot of calls lately to take a booth at different shows (bridal shows, baby shows, home shows at the mall) but have turned them down.  I don't like shows - they are expensive and I am really worried about not getting enough response to justify the outlay for the booth.

I hope so too Mike.<GR>

Yes there are Lorraine and/or Laretta.  Thanks for the comment

I have had a lot of luck with the Bridal fairs so far and will be closing on my first Bride's house shortly.  Sometimes it is worth the chance June.

Marketing is key, you have to promote your event, usually at least a month and a half in advance to get a descent turnout. Sounds like the promoter was lacking on her end. Like you said though, at least it wasn't a complete waste.

Isn't marketing the key to anything we want to do? This promoter was really lacking and she will suffer in the future.  Thanks for the comment David

PAddy,

I recently went to a couple of home shows; they were sparcelt attended. I think the economy is to blame.

I am sorry Terry I don't think Home Shows would be the best spot for me as a buyer's agent to be but for listing agents they might work.  The economy has definately taken a toll on everything,

I guess you sort of have to experience a bad show so that you'll know what a good one will be like, huh?  But it is good to hear you aren't throwing in the towel as I really think this is a great market niche for you!  And glad to hear you were able to meet up with a few AR folks on top of it!

Paddy, Sorry to hear that your show was a bust. I have been working on promoting a mixer that I am throwing tomorrow. I hope that what I am doing is going to work...

Hey Paddy,  Greetings from Milford and thank you for the plug!  You are being much kinder in your viewpoint about the hostess of the bridal show than I have been.  BOMB!!!  I plant to continue to pursue this market, but more cautiously.  If ya' don't swing the bat, ya' can't hit the ball!  And what is that mixer all about that Michael is talking about above - response #18?

I don't know about Michael's Mixer.  I will have to investigate but I have class at OCAR this morning.  Enjoy and keep on trying.  BTW I will leave your link here but if it against community guidelines to do that on anyone else's blog post in your comments.
