He really does have ears... I swear.

Its funny how certain trends seem to come back.  Do you remember the styles that were in place when you were younger?  I remember watching The Brady Bunch.  I didn't think much about their pants or hair style until I was older.  Now I look back and think their styles were silly.  But apparently that is just my opinion.  Having two pre-teens in the house, I see now that I am not 'cool' and don't know the latest trends.

According to my son, for the past several years having 'bed head' was the style.  People will actually through gel (or whatever) in their hair to make it look messy.

Personally I like short hair - if you could not tell from my picture.  I am not saying that everyone should have their hair short like mine, but I am not a fan of 'bed head'.  Now up until about 2-3 years ago, my son kept his hair pretty short (here are some first day of school pictures from a few years ago).

Since then, he has let his hair get a little longer.  I figured he would grow out of it once he realized how much work it is to maintain longer hair.  His sister would have told him if he would have asked (not that he ever had hair THAT long).

So for the past few years, he has had no ears, or at least none that I could see.  Don't get me wrong, I'll love my son no matter what hair style he is sporting.  But I've been wanting to take it off for quite some time.

I know I know.. its not that bad.  He looks a little like the Brady kids.  As a matter of fact, I was calling him Bobby for a little while.  And I realize thats THE style, its just not my styel.  Just recently, he requested a haircut.  Check him out...

Now I can see the boys face... and HE HAS EARS!!

( he told me to tell everyone he said 'HELLO' )

Hi John

Loved your post. Reminded me of when my step son Paul showed up at the house with blue hair.  How do I look he asked?  Very hip and cool we said?  A bit shocked but trying not to show him and we liked to think we could put up with just about anything as long as it wasn't hurting anything. The blue hair didn't last long.  He went on to red/blonde and then back his normal color.'s kind of fun watching them grow thru all the phases. Just like we all did!

Having 4 sons I can appreciate your story. I decided to take the easy way out. They always picked what type of hair cut or lack there of they wanted. It split 3 short 1 long.

John - Glad to see that his ears are still there.  Are they working well?  My kids seem to have "selective hearing" sometimes.

John - that is great and at least you raised your son to have a mind of his own. :)  He has got style! I agree the shorter the better - one less thing to worry about in the morning.

John - I've always been a fan of short hair for men/ boys. It drives me nuts when I see teenagers with messy hair and half of it covers their face.

So, I love the new style now. Much cleaner.

John, I'm with you I like that second picture better. Very handsome I must say.

The best man in our wedding had his hair in a pony tail as it was shoulder length but hey it was the 70's.  I was actually very glad that short hair was cool when our son was growing up as I didn't care for those long styles but the good thing about hair is that it is temporary.  At one point I died my sons roots almost white and my daughter's bangs blue but the fad passed and I'm happy to say they have normal hair now.  The cool thing is that they did the weird stuff with their hair instead of tattoos or body piercings.

Yes, the short hair does look nicer, however I am from the 80's. Long hair, long rat tails were cool. My 14 year old also is refusing to cut his hair, but I know it is not for me to complain as long as it is clean and brushed. (Ok so they didn't always brush in the 80's)

Up until I started my real estate career, I had hair below my shoulders. It is a constant fight for my wife to keep my hair cut here lately, because for whatever reason I am starting to miss the long hair.

Ana - You are right, it is fun to watch them grow up.  Some things are cute and other things I can honestly do without.  Long hair... no problem.  If thats the biggest concern, I'll be good to go.  LOL

Denise - 4 boys.. must be a crazy house on the weekends with sports and stuff.  I think its important to let them have their own style, so good call.

Thank you Shirley.

LOL Jason - I have been known to have that issue, or so my wife tells me.  His appear to be working pretty well.

Naoma - I agree.  I think its important for them to choose their own style.  So far is has worked for us.  No odd clothes or scary make-up (crossing my fingers).

Thanks Loreena. As you can tell, I too love the shorter hair.

Marchel - I think long hair was the norm in the 70s, so its a shame you were not a big fan. HA.  Im not so afraid of the tattoos, but would like them 'out of sight' (if it ever comes up).  It makes it more difficult (in todays environment anyway) to get that executive job with a tattoo on your neck.  But hey, some companies have grown so perhaps it wont be an issue.  Or maybe we wont have to deal with it at all.

Greg - I am 35.  The boy is 10 (daughter is 11).  Its getting close to the birth.  Nervous?

Angie - I dont have an 'issue' with the long hair, its just not really for me (as you can see from my profile pic).  I think I was more irritated with the 'messy look'.  Its still around.  As long as you take care of your hair, more power to you. :-)

JL - If you want to grow your hair, then darn it, you should grow your hair.

Terry - I cant wait until my kids have kids.  Im practicing the "I remember when" stories now.  And the "I told you it will happen to you one day".  Then again, I also want to be the guy who yells at strange kids for walking around my yard.  LOL

Paul - We have a lot of picture that we put aside for the embarrassing moments.  Im looking forward to when my kids are older, but I dont want them to grow up.  Is that possible???

Hey John,
I don't care what length your son's hair is. He seems like a sweet boy. Don't tell him, but he's so cute!

Handsome boy John! My son wakes up and rolls out of bed, never combs his hair - it's pretty curly too - but it's like his trademark - everyone knows him BY his hair if they don't know his name. He's also an actor at PESH and had to recently cut it but here's his head shot from last year - you can't complain about your son's hair after seeing mine ;-)

Thank you Lydia.  We think he is cute, but we would think so even if he had a third eye.  :-)

Karen - That is quite a head of hair.  Much longer than my son's.  Looks good on him though.  I'd only be able to tell which looks better when I have a 'with short hair' and 'without short hair' picture.  Otherwise I'd say his initial hair cut looks natural.

Reminds me of someone close to my heart, my son has short hair during the school year, then he does the Dirk N, thing.  Short and then doesn't cut it until school year starts.  By the time school starts he looks like a hippy from the 70's.
