April Fools, or Conflicker and much ado about nothing!

So you've read the email alerts, you've seen the stories on the Internet and you probably heard a blurb or two on the news about the coming of the dreaded CONFLICKER.C!

Even the Department of Homeland Security weighed in!

Conflicker is described as a worm, a particularly nasty type of virus that infects computers and travels through shared files on servers to infect all the computers on the network. They'll steal your passwords, credit card numbers and cookies; say many of the alarmist stories!

What to do? Well Microsoft suggests you update your windows software at their website. To do this you must run Window Genuine Advantage, if you are running on a bootlegged version of Windows that will be a problem.

Collusion??? Perhaps, or perhaps just complicit apathy, realizing that those people with older versions of Windows that are not supported anymore will have to buy a new system, and that those people who are running on pirated software will likely take the bait and BUY NEW!

So how bad is this worm? I called my techie guy today and said "do I have anything to worry about?", this was his reply.

Conficker.c infects small number of U.S. PCs, IBM says

Seems the worm or virus in mostly only present in Asia and parts of Europe. Only a little less than 6% of infected computers were using a North American IP address. (see link)

To Ponder: Why April first?  Think about it, the really nasty viruses that have come out had no notification, they hit without warning. They did not target a specific date or time, they simply attacked.

So is this just a prank, an April fools joke? Perhaps, perhaps not, but just in case I went ahead and updated all my software!

Here are some links to get your virus protection or update now!

I've been keeping my virus and operating system software updated just in case.  I can't help but think that this is just another one of those alarmist predictions.
