There is a new hotline to help people who face eviction because their landlords are in foreclosure. The hotline, 415-495-8012, based in San Francisco, is operated by Tenants Together, a non-profit organization that advocates for tenant rights. It is staffed by trained volunteers, including a team of law students. Foreclosures end most leases in California, although tenants in the State are generally entitled to a 60-day notice to vacate in foreclosure situations. However, when one might be worried about the economy and one's own employment situation, 60 days might not be sufficient to find appropriate living quarters, especially if there is a family and pets involved. Add to that the prospect of the foreclosed property being an apartment building or several buildings, and the problem is exascerbated. Even tenants who have paid their rent on time and been model tenants can have their lives disrupted by their landlord's foreclosure. Tenants who need further information about their rights and possible help if they are facing eviction are encouraged to call the new hotline. The number again is 415-495-8012.
