New hotline for tenants with landlords in foreclosure

By
Real Estate Agent with HomeSmart Realty West CalBRE #01458572

If you leave a comment, Jim will visit your blog and leave a comment, and I'll get to keep this box! There is a new hotline to help people who face eviction because their landlords are in foreclosure.

The hotline, 415-495-8012, based in San Francisco, is operated by Tenants Together, a non-profit organization that advocates for tenant rights. It is staffed by trained volunteers, including a team of law students.

Foreclosures end most leases in California, although tenants in the State are generally entitled to a 60-day notice to vacate in foreclosure situations. However, when one might be worried about the economy and one's own employment situation, 60 days might not be sufficient to find appropriate living quarters, especially if there is a family and pets involved. Add to that the prospect of the foreclosed property being an apartment building or several buildings, and the problem is exascerbated.

Even tenants who have paid their rent on time and been model tenants can have their lives disrupted by their landlord's foreclosure.

Tenants who need further information about their rights and possible help if they are facing eviction are encouraged to call the new hotline. The number again is 415-495-8012.

This is very intersting.  There is nothing like this in New Hampshire and Tenants are left in a precarious position.

This is a great idea on your local citizens to band together to protect the innocent. I'm sorry, just because the house went back to the bank in foreclosure, I think the lease should remain in effect. If someone dies, it stays in effect, why not if it goes back to the bank. They should just be required to sell it as an investment property or hold on to it until the lease ends. (SORRY BANKS!)

I would love to see something like this in our area.  I hope this post will help some tenants in this situation.

Jim -that is truly a a very sad situation when a tenant has performed and the landlord defaults.  More and more on rentals a good agent will want to know the financial stability of the landlord and also interview them as well maybe require some verification of good standing.  At least on the front end they try to check this out.
