The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean on the island of Hispaniola. It sits 120 miles east of Jamaica. Christopher Columbus unofficially discovered the Dominican Republic in 1492. After this "discovery", this area became something of a launching point for conquests througout the region. Soon after, in 1496, Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, became the first European settlement in the West.
While the history of the area is fascinating, there's nothing linke the sandy beaches that buffer affordable vacation homes from crystal-blue waters. And as a background, rain forests and sky-high palm trees border this lush paradise. Coffee plantations still play their role in the economy of this area as they have for many, many years.
If you want to avoid the main crowdes, trek into the mountains to find hidden waterfalls or unknown peaches. Start your search in the Dominican Republic's hidden corners Isla Saona or Playa Bavaro. Or to just breathe in nature and escape the world as a whole, go to Jaragua National Park or Ocean World.
