Knowing What Your Customer is Looking for – Build it and They Will Come

By
Real Estate Agent with Eau Claire Realty, Inc.

Wouldn’t it be great if you knew what people were looking for on the internet and then they in turn would find your site? Well of course that’s why we build and have websites but the content is generally static and it relies on the premise that what the customer is looking for doesn’t change or evolve. But that’s not true and while the majority of traffic might be centered on a few specific topics in relation to real estate a big chunk is looking for a lot of different topics. This is generally referred to as the longtail but sometimes this tail isn’t that long or if you understand and can visualize the long tail in your head, sometimes the tail becomes much shorter. That is obscure phrases start growing in traffic and soon become widely searched. Being able to pounce on these is hard and sometimes being the first doesn’t necessarily come with a reward.

But as I said things change and people look for different things. There are buzzwords and topics that come up in the mainstream media and quickly people start trying to find them. This year one of the big ones is the $8000 tax credit. No one knew for sure what would become of this and everyone pretty much sat around and waited for the government to decide just what exactly they were going to do. But once it became finalized people wanted information. I know I got a few phone calls asking me for the juicy details and I was more than happy to oblige them.

But what has your site done since then? As I pointed out earlier most websites are rather static in their content. Did your site change or evolve as the customers’ needs changed? Probably not. If you are an avid blogger you might have covered this topic and congratulations if you did. You might have received a lot of traffic and even a few clients as a result. But did you think about your website?

I thought considering how popular this topic was that I should be taking advantage of the situation and not in the way you think. I thought it was my responsibility to make this information easily accessible. That’s why I designed a page for this topic. Since creating this page I have seen an overwhelming response. It is quickly becoming one of the most popular pages on my site and I have quickly shot up in the ranks for a variety of phrases related to the topic.

Keeping in front of your visitors is important and it can quickly pay off. I would suggest that blogging about a topic is a quick and easy solution but for sustained results and overall traffic to your website making a page around a specific topic is important. You can also see my other post on this topic for more details on how to design a page that can dominate in the search results.
