Having been a member of a couple of groups, one in MD and now another in FL, I can say without hesitation, YES, they work. I'm talking about a regular weekly meeting, like BNI,NPI, etc. where there is a structured format. I find, in addition to getting those referrals, that you can hone your speaking and listening skills. Sadly, most of us are short on the listening side! Weekly repetition helps you remember who you want at top of consciousness for giving referrals. I find that listening to my customers/clients helps me to refer quality people to them for their needs and wants. For that, they are appreciative. It adds yet more value to my services. I have learned how to succinctly describe what I do and make it more interesting than just "I help people buy and sell homes". It has made me think more creatively, and certainly has helped me think on my feet! And another very important piece to this networking is making trusted friends, taking it beyond acquaintance. Although I am no longer in MD, some of my dearest friends have come from that networking group and although we may now be scattered, we still get together frequently during the year. It's merely expanded the referral base even further!
So, if you have an opportunity to join one of these groups, give it a try, make the commitment. I know you'll find it worthwhile in so many ways.
