Bedford NY is located in Westchester County NY. It is about 40 miles north of New York City.
Within Bedford there are many hamlets including Bedford Hills, Bedford Village and Katonah. In 2000, the population of this town was at about 18,000 people in its 39.3 square miles.
Bedford NY was founded in 1680 by a group of Puritans from Stamford CT. They bought three square miles of land from Chief Katonah and several other Indians. These New England Puritans quickly started building a settlement there. In 1697 Bedford was actually made a part of Connecticut until the King of England settled the quarrel and made Bedford a part of New York State again. During the Revolutionary War, Bedford was the Westchester County seat after the Battle of White Plains until the British burned Bedford in 1779. The Courthouse still stands in Bedford and is the oldest government building in Westchester County.
Today, Bedford is an affluent town. Many famous people have moved to this area, such as Billy Baldwin, Chevy Chase, Martha Stewart, Glenn Close and Robert Goulet. In Bedford you can find great shopping and many exquisite restaurants.
