Lil Devil on Video Technology

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with CELLing Realty CalBRE #01445865

"We change as we grow, and as we learn."   Oh but how do we change?  We like to think of everyone as equal, and that what one can do, so can another, but that's just not the case.  We aren't all equalReading Blogs on Active Rain, plus so many different outside ones, it amazes me how many people know an awful lot about the technological parts of blogging, vlogging, and all the other 'ing things. But do we know how to do it.

1) Learning to take Videos- First step is the camera: The Flip is one of the most poplular and is easy to use, and download onto the computer.

Lil Devil-Yea sure it's easy.  I didn't even know where the batteries went in the camera, how to record or anything, let alone how long to make a Video.  After taking the Video I knew I could use the USB on the Flip to upload it, but after that I was lost.  Utterly and completely lost.  Thank Gawd I was following someone called Flip_Video_Tips on Twitter........

Lil Angel- It's OK, not everyone knows how to do all the tech stuff. At least you know where to find the info you need, and if you can't figure it out you know who to ask.

2) Ok now you took the Video, and learned to upload to You Tube all on your own-but did you edit it?

Lil Devil-  I can't believe after all this time that I still didn't know how to edit a Video!  He** I didn't even know what program to use, let alone how to do it!

Lil Angel- Oh I am so glad that I have some good friends that I can ask. We all learn at a different pace. And you did learn how to post to You Tube, so that's something.  One thing at a time :)

Imagine this first Video with an extra 3 minutes of shots of the ceiling and audio of a phone conversation.  After asking online how to edit, several people told me they used Windows Movie Maker.  To show you how all of us are not equal, I couldn't even find the program because I was looking under programs for Movie Maker (starting with an M).  It wasn't until I told them I didn't have the program that I realized it was listed under the W's.....Windows Movie Maker.  Yea we aren't all equal when it comes to understanding technology.

This Video is only 1 min and 17 seconds after editing-and I have learned that People that watch Videos's want them short.  The average Video is about 3 1/2 minutes long, so I'm good with this considering the subject material.

This next Video is one where I learned that you shouldn't drive and shoot at the same time-it can be hazardous to your health :)

Lil Devil- Yea but I can still see parts of your car, and why did you move the camera to take a picture of the birds?

Lil Angel- One thing that is very important is to be yourself.  If you are excellent with technology so be it, but don't make a Video that oversells the neighborhood, or whatever you are shooting.  People want to see what's "real".  So, don't worry about perfection!

I made this Video specifically for people looking for  Foreclosures in Serrano Del Vista.  This Video is a little over 4 minutes long, a little longer than the average, but if someone really wants to know about the neighborhood they'll watch it. I also learned to add those cool frames with words that I put Kathy McGraw CELLing Realty on. There's one at the beginning, and a different one at the end.  I wanted to make sure that anyone looking for a home in this community would know how to contact me.  Anyway, bottom line is although there are a few issues with this, it serves it's purpose. I was able to do it in Windows Movie Maker, then upload to You Tube.  For now I'm pleased with my 2nd editing as each one is a little better than the other one....and that's what learning is all about.  Improving each time.

So, although we aren't all created equal either Windows Movie Maker

or Photoshop Elements (the newest one) can help us edit the Videos we make.

Funny, but I too heard this on the Video, so maybe I do need a brake job.... LOL :)  Did you hear the birds, and see that trash truck come around the corner right at me :)  I told you it's hazardous to film and drive :)

Loved the video's, your granddaughter is hillarious.

Also enjoyed the tour. How did you do that driving?

Loved the train in the background and seeing the snow on the mountain tops and the leaves on the trees.

I've always wanted to visit where I could see both.

I hate the editing...it takes me too long and quite frankly I just don't enjoy it. Since my goal in 2009 was to do a video of all my listings, I am plugging away. But, it is just not fun. I like to have fun when  I work, wish I knew someone to do the editing in the Ann Arbor area that didn't charge a arm and a leg.

Wish Fred Light lived here. LOL

Hi Kathy

What I enjoy about technology is that it is a moving target.  There is always something new to learn.

I am glad you continue to take the next step.

Kathy, Wow, I am SO impressed with your videos!  I would be so proud of myself.  Your grandaughter is a doll and the homes are lovely.  I've just moved this up on my list of things to learn --  and I'll know where to go for help!

Missy-I am smiling because I took another one when it was snowing and my tree was full of grapefruit and the neighbors was full of oranges, another anomaly of Southern California :)

I am not overly fond of spending so much time, but like you had no one else to do it.  Necessity breeds competence. And yes I was driving....that trash truck darn near scared me to death, and in my commercial video you can hear the swoosh of cars next to me :)

Ted- Thanks, and what you enjoy is what frustrates many of us....I know I want to just learn it, and be able to perfect it before the next thing comes along :)  But that's what's great is we know who to call :)

Carole-Call me anytime.  I have a list of people that know one thing or another.....it helps.  First thing's first get the little Flip.  It makes it so easy, at least the first step :)  And thanks for the comment on my Granddaughter, I couldn't believe the other one was egging her on, and she performed so "nicely" LOL :)

Hi Mary- I too cringed when that trash truck came around the corner..it was bigger than me :)  And can you believe she was doing that to her toe...LOL I was laughing at the other child and her reactions that you could barely hear :)  I was so happy that I learned how to edit it, and sure I can do better with more attempts.

What a great post. I gobbled it up because I've lately begun experimenting with video on my blog and its great to see another professional's take and advice

I learned when I started doing my "Friday Report" that I had to loose weight because I heard the camera added 10 pounds.

Then I found out that I really needed to relax and I got a lot of comments about smiling more.

Finally, I decided that less is more. My first few video blogs were 5 minutes long and the response was to keep it short. So now I keep it under 2 minutes and its made a world of difference.

Here's the link to the blog I'm talking about: http://www.c21ab.net/Blog.html

Kathy, thank you for the post and the insight. It was a pleasure to read.

good job on your videos... I'm kind of torn on them, and wonder if people really take the time to watch them all.  I've done 4 or 5 on how to prep your home for sale, and one on a walk on the American River near my home.  May daughter watched that one, and said it was creepy... "no one I know would get why you filmed it... what are you doing??? why would anyone want to go on a walk with you like that?"  I liked it!  I thought it showed the wild are right in the heart of Fair Oaks.... but what do I know?

Great job Kathy! I'm quite impressed with the 'trick of the toes' by your granddaughter...I sat here trying to do that myself and am just not that limber...I must say though, if you're going to put your foot in your mouth, this is the more attractive method! LOL! I've stopped using my FLUP camera because the computer program seemed to stop working. But I loved it when I first got it last summer. You will have so much fun with it, and your videos are fun to view. cheers!

Hi Kathy, I really enjoy this premise. It's cool that you're getting the hang of video. That is a really sot topic & one that the public enjoys. I need to work on that. Keep 'em coming Kathy!
