St Paul Historic Home 8

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Kirby Fine Homes

This weeks Historic Showcase Home is 445 Summit Ave.

Know as the Shipman-Greve house, the home has been described by some as the perfect example of the Queen Anne style. Construction began in 1882 by Henry Shipman. For some reason lost through time, he was unable to complete the home, so Herman Greve, a local real estate broker at the time, purchased the home and finished it in 1883. In 1912, the home was bought by Frank Ford who added the iron fence and the west wing as seen in the photos.

It is easy to see the Queen Anne details in the spindle work, gables, half-timbering, and lattice design. The home has a Japanese flair to it making it truly one of a kind. The architect is unknown and research has shown no other similar work in St Paul. Construction materials include limestone, a second floor sheathing of wood and plaster, ending with wavy patterned slate at the third floor gables.

As you can see, the current condition of the house is begging for revival. I took this photo fall of 2006 and you can see the overgrowth that consumes this once beautiful home. It sits on a wonderful corner property and I wish the owners would open up the lot so the home can shine through. The only time to see the entire structure is in the dead of winter when all the vegetation is dormant.

The home has not changed owners for quite a few years. Public records show the home at approximately 8000 square feet and about 7 bedrooms.

I love historical old homes !!  What a beautiful old home !!   The home would look bigger if some of the trees and bushes were cut back.

Thank you for sharing !!

Jennifer- What a beauty! I too wish some of the vegetation was cut back. Just to show off the gorgeous architecture.

Debi & Lauren - yes, this is one of the most beautiful Queen Anne homes on Summit Avenue in St Paul. The vines of the home actually cover up windows. It is such a shame....this home is on a corner lot and from most angles during the summer, it is almost impossible to see there is a home on the lot.

Teri - my husband has promised me that one day we will live in the historic district of St Paul. I doubt it will be a home on Summit, but I won't say no to a home on Portland!

Sharon - wow, you have been commenting all over the place. Well, you are forgiven for missing this home. I mean, you do work for a living and teach CHLMS classes, other than just blog. Thanks for stopping by and glad you like the widget!

Jennifer - I try to comment every day, especially on any blogs posted to the Buildings and Architecture group I started (I think that's the responsible thing for a group founder to do). Often the comments take precedence over either my Active Rain blog or my personal blog. I also like to help and connect agents, just like helping and connecting our clients. Hope you liked the new widget logo that the Institute sent you today.

We teach CHLMS no more than one class (2 days) per month, and I've learned to comment and blog outside of business hours, so our main business truly is working with clients to buy and sell real estate.

ok, finally a place I can admit ignorance, and not say "but I can find out!"  Jennifer, what is chlms?  I lived in St. Paul for years, my dad grew up on Grand Avenue.  Must be why I am addicted to old architecture, and Ayn Rand!  I wish I could submerge myself in studying these grand old homes..life is just too darn short

Victoria - sorry it has taken me a day to respond. We have been looking for a home of our own. Sharon took up the reigns for me. Wow, you like Ayn Rand....my husband and I are huge fans and I have never met anyone else who knows who she is. If you haven't yet, you should check out some of her smaller novels. She is really a great writer and I like the persepective she takes on socialism and society.

I have been in love with old homes since before I was born.... :)

Sharon - thank you so much for answering Victoria's question for me. I really appreciate it. Stop making me look so bad! ;)

I don't even know how I started with her, but read Atlas Shrugged when I was around 20..I think it was a pivotal experience for me.  I have read some of her shorter works, my kids bought the Early Ayn Rand for a Christmas present..I am trying to get reading time back in my life this year! Dish Network had an old interview an documentery about her..did you catch it?  What an incredible mind!

Victoria - no I didn't...I will have to look for it. I would love to hear her speak. Read her first novel, "We the Living". I think it is one of my favorites. But "The Fountainhead" will always be dear because I can see so many of the characters in real life that it is almost funny.

I read We the Living years ago, have the well worn copy in the "cannot get rid of" bookshelf!  I have been carrying the Fountainhead around for 2-3 years in my car, always waiting for that long open house, or, even more ridiculous, a day off, to get back to it.  If you read Anthem, which is quick, you feel the beginning of someone who will be great...such fun!  Have not done a web search, but maybe the interview is online somewhere..

OK, Jennifer and Victoria - I have to admit I'm an Ayn Rand fan as well. I liked Fountainhead because of the architecture, but Atlas Shrugged was my favorite. Yes, I've read the early ones, but Atlas still stands out. So much goes on in our society now, and I think often of her novel. and see so many similarities.

I have re-read Atlas Shrugged twice since my original time in my 2Os..so surprised at how much more I got from it.  Fountainhead is glorious as far as I have read it, captured how I feel about architecture and some people!  Not many people I know can love these inanimate shapes and internalize them, something else unique to this site, and you two fellow travellers!  There are so many similarites now, I am afraid for my children, and strive to teach them that they need to recognize compassion versus enabling.  Guilt is not an acceptable emotion.  Quiet pride in an achievement is not something to be ashamed of.  Then I go and and do Mom penance for all of my own sins of omission for working so much, and wonder where the balance is...

Victoria - don't feel guilty for working so much. Work when you work. Play when you play. Parent when you parent.   My "kids" are all grown now - and I'm so proud of them. It's not easy when they make decisions you wouldn't and choices you wouldn't - but that's success. You wanted them to think for themselves, to make decisions, to be free. Their choices may not be yours, but they are making a choicel You succeeded. They are alive. They live. They think. They decide.

Sharon - I think it is amazing that Ayn Rand wrote these novels in the 1940s and you can see the things she describes today. She knew human nature so well. One of the reasons why I believe it is so important to study that past. My favorite saying is "Those who fail to know the past, are doomed to repeat it." I look at where our society is heading and sometimes it scares me to think we could end up like "the fall of Rome". I just hope I never see it in my lifetime.

Victoria - my husband and I share your sentiments. We have two sons under two and worry about the world they will be living in when they are grown. All we can do is teach them the difference between right and wrong, compassion, and show them love. Hopefully this will be enough to be the best they can be. My two year old already loves to read and I hope it sticks so he can enjoy Rand also.

Jennifer, I agree with your favorite saying. You should be so proud that your 2 year old son loves to read. You've given him the gift of a lifetime - when young children read, and are read to, it opens them to a wonderful world. It's so sad to see adults who never learned to love reading.
