Beware fraudulent checks!

By
Real Estate Agent with ERA Wilder Realty

I received a check for $4,450 in my name at my office address. The check was from Fidelity Title drawn on SunTrust Bank in FL. And the check was delivered by UPS and was sent by Elias Distribution Center in Chicago.

Since I receive checks only from my broker, I smelled a rat. Why would Fidelity Title send me a check? I had never worked with them.

I called Fidelity - the lady I was directed to had received other such calls and assured me that the check had not been sent by them. She asked me to contact SunTrust Bank.

SunTrust Bank denied all knowledge of a check to me and suggested that I report it as fraud to my local authorities.

What is the sender's game plan?

The sender had paid UPS at least $30, so what were they hoping to get in return?

If I had deposited the check, it would have bounced and the bank would have charged me $25. How would that benefit the sender?

Is there some way for the sender to find out my bank account number? Is this a form of identity theft?

I finally handed it over to my Accounts Department with the UPS envelope.

I have heard about this also.  I think they can somehow get your account number if you deposit it.  I am not sure but I think I have heard that.  Thanks for sharing and I wish you the best.
