Yes, they can. The new little guy that I adopted a few weeks ago presents with such.
He was grumbling, muttering and pacing while sleeping and eating...Fortunately he was acting out when I took him to the Vet...The Vet immediately recognized it as anxiety due to the fact he and his wife adopted a dog who had the same issues and he could distract him with cookies and belly rubs and checked out OK physically otherwise.
I will say Toby has improved greatly with fewer and fewer episodes. Even though there was growling involved there was absolutely no aggression ever shown.
Rescue Remedy is helpful to pets in transition. Lots of love and consistency helps also.
Yes Terry, dogs do experience anxiety.
Like Bobo, Foster dog #4. He was so traumatized prior to coming to my home, that he suffered extreme anxiety over every little situation. He didn't want to be left alone. He didn't want to be separated. He didn't want to be in a crate. He wouldn't eat, he got so agitated. He feared everything.
We've been working on that, with great success.
Dogs are very much like humans. They too have fears, especially of the unknown and especially if they have not been either socialized or have been abused. Usually time, and love will help them overcome.
Terry, it sounds like with lots of love, consistency, and attention that your new dog should be just fine.
I think it says a whole lot about our furry friends and their emotions that so many believe they are not capable of.
With so many pets now being displaced it is overwhelming. If only we could network ahead of time to place the animals before they go into the shelters....I know the owners don't want to give them up in many cases and try to hang onto them for as long as possible but if they would only reach out much earlier....
Toby , from my understanding was a victim of the stockton, ca area foreclosure. Apparently had been in shelter , was pulled and placed in foster home and was actually adopted out but they did not recognize his grumbling, mumbling as anxiety and were afraid of him and he was turned into rescue again.
There is absolutely nothing to be afraid of.......he is like jello in your hands and when you give him treats he is ever so gentle to take them.
I hope that he is better daily. I am so glad that you are able to give him a good home.
Terry, how wonderful that you saw the good in him and gave him a chance and are making the efforts necessary to reassure and acclimate him. God, that is really something, foreclosures are traumatizing even our animals... Hope he is much better already and improving everyday!
