Uxbridge...The little town that can! Why I love living here.

Shhh, Don't tell anyone else about Uxbridge. Why not? Because we want to keep the small town feeling alive. Uxbridge has been developing steadily over the years and that's great because we want our town to prosper, but we don't want it to grow so much that we lose the quaintness of our lovely community. That's the consensus of the majority of people I speak with in the place I now call my hometown. That's how I feel as well.

We moved to Uxbridge three years ago to provide our kids with a safer environment to grow up in, fresher air, countryside, and the kind of starry nights that you just don't get in the city.  We have never looked back.  I love falling asleep to the sound of frogs croaking in the nearby pond, crickets chirping and yes the occasional barking of coyotes making their way through the woods behind my house.  These are some of the pleasures of Uxbridge. Uxbridge also has much more to offer, we are after all the trail capital of Canada.

Uxbridge has some amazing countryside trails. The Town Trails, the Countryside Trails and the Oak Ridges Trail (spanning the 150 kms of the Oak Ridges Moraine) all connect to the Trans-Canada Trail (which crosses the entire country)

I especially love the wildlife and the farm animals of Uxbridge. The commute from our home in town to basically anywhere we would want to travel, rewards us with picturesque views of farms and the like. I know it sounds corny...but I love to look at the cows, horses and various types of wildlife while driving. I often feel uplifted when I see horses grazing in the fields. Living in ‘the country' is definitely good for lowering the blood pressure.

Of course Uxbridge is much more than countryside and hiking trails. We have an amazing Art Gallery called The Green Goose Gallery.

That's where I feed my soul every Thursday night with my weekly Acrylic Art Classes. Many local artists display their beautiful creations there.

The kids love going to our own small town theatre. The Roxy. With weekly new releases there is no reason to venture into ‘The City' as we Uxbridgians like to call anywhere but here.

There are plenty of Restaurants and Pubs. The newest, The Piccadilly boasts an outdoor patio. It's conveniently located right next door to The Roxy, so you can walk into ‘town' and have a drink after seeing the latest movie.

There is really no reason to ever leave Uxbridge if you don't want to. We have every convenience here that you would ever need. From Grocery stores to upscale Clothing stores, you can find it right here in Uxbridge. If you're lucky you might be treated to a funny sight that my kids and I saw once at the local Mac's Milk...A John Deere Tractor parked right in front of the store! Now you don't see that in Toronto!

OK Kathy, I'll bite!

Your "small" town sounds much larger than my small town (Coopersville Michigan, boasting 2000 residents! give or take a few). I also love the small town feel! It has been an awesome place to raise our kids. Funny, we purchased our home in 1990 with plans of moving "in 3 to 5 years". We're still in the same home.

We are close to the school so become a gathering place for all the kids who live "in the country". My house is always the bus stop before football games and the gathering/hotel afterwards. It is awesome because I always know who my kids are hanging out with and what they are doing. The other parents call me to check stories out! How funny! I never thought I'd be one of THOSE parents!

You write very eloquently and I can tell you love where you live...I may even want to visit there someday!

Thanks for sharing Uxbridge with me.

Kathy,

I'm ashamed to say I don't know EXACTLY where Uxbridge is located.  I seem to confuse it with Unionville ... am I way off ?

It does sound like a lovely town though !

Mary: Cooperstown is definitely much smaller than Uxbridge. We have 17,000 people in the town of Uxbridge but that doesn't mean that they all live right 'in town.' We have many farms and smaller 'hamlets' surrounding Uxbridge.

Be thankful that the kids gather at your house: it's good to know where they are, and if there at home then all the better. You can keep a close watch on them. We also try to create a place where the kids' friends are welcome.

Thanks for the compliment on my writing skills. I try.

Sandie: Uxbridge is located about 30 minutes north of Ajax on Durham 23. We are about 10 mins. North of Dagmar Ski Resort and Skyloft. We are East of Unionville about 30 mins and 1 or 2 intersections North. We are pretty much 20-30 mins from everywhere. 30 mins North of Pickering, Ajax, 30 mins East of Newmarket, 20 mins West of Port Perry. 20 mins East of Stouffville.

With all those directions you should be able to find us now....lol

Good luck keeping it that way!  People are searching for and retiring to these "unique, small towns all over the USA.  It does sound like a wonderful place to live and raise your children.  Enjoyed reading about it.  Thanks

Hi Kathy! Small correction, it occurs many times...I live in Coopersville, not Cooperstown. Cooperstown has the hall of fame, Coopersville has a train! I think JaneAnne is correct about the pictures. I'd like to see your town and I'll show you mine!

Mary: Sorry about the Cooperstown thing. I like the rhyme...funny. If you go to localism there are some pictures posted there. Hmmm I should add a link to that page on localism so people can check out the pics.
