During the late 1800s, an Army Chaplain Winfield Scott decided to buy a patch of land to grow sweet potatoes. This land would become Scottsdale, Arizona. While those sweet potatoes are long forgotten, Scottsdale has become a trip planners mecca for golfing, sightseeing and just enjoying life. Frank Lloyd Wright was another winter resident of Scottsdale, spending the colder months of 1930s in this dry climate. The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation headquarters are now located here. And, you can take a 90-minute tour of his living quarters and studios.
If you want some fun in the sun, then you should take a hike up Camelback Mountain’s 1.2-mile Summit Trail—or the Scenic Stairmaster as the locals call it. The view from the top includes Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to the east and the Piestewa Peak to the west. But, if you need to get out of the sun, then head to Discover 350 hands-on exhibitions and watch movies about sea monsters and desert life on the five-story IMAX screen at the Arizona Science Center. Shop for Native American jewelry and contemporary art by local artists in Old Town’s many galleries. Or, rent an affordable vacation home and sit out on the porch with a nice, cool drink.
