Are You Proud Today... and Ever?

When Somalia pirates hijacked the Ukrainian ship carrying tanks and a lot of weapons including rockets, and Russia and The Ukraine sent their ships there, I was expecting some drastic takeover and punishment. It did not happen. They negotiated the ransom from $20 Mil to $3 Mil, end of story. Yes I know they do not aloow to do anything there, but hey, if you do not want anything to be done, you take care of pirates yourself, and if you can't, why would the world listen to what you want and what you don't want.

Anyway, it keeps happening and Russians and not only Russians start making a business of forwarding the ships through this area. They have already sunk several pirates, but so far it is a negligent number. Business is fourishing.

Today the news came of the american ship hijacked by pirates. Not the first time, not the second, not even the hundredth time. What was different this time is that for the first time, at least as far as I know, the sailors jumped the pirates, fought back and took the control of the ship. I am enormously proud that these sailors are American sailors.

Too many people in the world love to think that Americans are all about money. Well, open your eyes and clear your ears. Americans are arrogant people who proved that they are patriots. It was not making speeches and debating. It is facing armed bandits, who did not board the ship to make apologies, be nice, and politically correct.

I am proud, and not only today, not only on special occasion, I am proud to be American, period.

I do not know how it will end. I hope it will not be handled by going to the Security Council. There is nobody in the world to stop us from doing the right thing and teach the bastards the lesson... except our own leaders. Will we see the resolve or another low bow?

We'll see.

Mike, once again you know it all don't you!  As I said, I  have family who are merchant mariners and none of them consider themselves a sailor.  I guess the dining room staff of a cruise ship could be considered sailors, according to your definition too eh?  Not sure any of them would know what you were talking about if you called them a sailor.  As long as we're throwing around names, my family members graduated from Kingspoint.

Hugh, please uncross your arms.  Don't you and Mike know that is a defensive posture, which comes through in each of your comments?   As for your grandfather, he could consider himself a sailor because he was in the Navy.  My father was enlisted Navy for 20 years and would take exception with anyone considering a merchant mariner a "sailor."  Its not derogatory to address someone in the merchant marine as a merchant mariner, they earned that title and quite possibly would not like being called a sailor.  BTW I love your christian values.  Now if you could only show us what they are.

Lenn - The problem is that the pirates don't attack with ships, they use small speedboats and naval radar probably don't pick them up.  I'm waiting for a cruise missile to take out a 'mothership'.

Terry, The truth of the matter was that if I told you that you were an intelligent beautiful women and I hope my daughter grows up to be like you.

You would insult me site some left wing blog to verify it and then find a way to blame it on Bush.

Terry - again you are doing nothing but proclaiming your ignorance. I am sorry that your family was too proud to call themselves a sailor. Were they licensed merchant mariners or unlicensed seamen (which is also a sailor). You say that they all graduated from Kings Point, which, makes them members of the U.S. Navy auxiallary, sailors.

Oh, by the way, it is not my definition of sailor. Here is an assortment of accepted definitions of sailor:

A sailor or mariner is a person who navigates water-borne vessels or assists in their operation, maintenance, or service. The term can apply to professional mariners, military personnel, and recreational sailors as well as a plethora of other uses.

any member of a ship's crew, esp. one below the rank of officer

One who serves in a navy or works on a ship.

One who travels by water.

a person whose occupation is sailing or navigation; mariner.

I doubt in all their years at Kingspoint that they were told they were not sailors.

Terry & Mike - I am an immigrant and use the word as I would have translated. For the sake of the blog and discussion, it actually does not matter. I am proud of people who showed courage and resolve, no matter how you call them.

I am a biut surprised, as I was not the first one to use "sailor" describing this act of fending off the pirates. Below is the direct quote from Economist.com

"American sailors kidnapped
Bolder than ever
Apr 8th 2009
From Economist.com
Pirates kidnap 20 American sailors off the coast of Somalia"

It is used 2 times in the title and subtitle. Makes me feel easier.

As for whether they are private people or government employees, did not matter for me. Courage is not a given, and is not necessarily going with the employment.

Charlie - I did not know that. I google Tripolitan Pirates, and read about it. Thank you for directing me .

Bill - I know now, thanks to Charlie and you. And I do know Todd Beamer. And I will remember him.

I just heard the Navy is sending more ships to the area for these 4 terrorists who are holding 1 hostage.  Yesterday we looked weak, today we look like France.  The President not taking action  is now putting all Americans at risk to kidnapping.

If he can not stand up to 4 guys on a boat how is he going to protect us against a madman with a bomb?

Jon - I was thrilled to hear the bravery of the American crew.  I am proud to be an American!  But, I'm a worried American.  Like Larry pointed out, it looks like the only thing Somali pirates have to contend with  in future attempts is the ship's crew.  Not very reassuring.  I think I also heard something about if any American hurt the pirates it will be treated as a crime?!?!  I sure hope that is incorrect information - haven't had time to verify it yet,

Hi Jon, I too am proud of the way the sailors aboard the ship rose up.

I think that the President is sending signals to the world that we are weak (not how I feel) and can be bullied. The fact that he's not uttered one word on this subject speaks volumes to me!

My thoughts and prayers are with the captain and his family.

Hi, Jon!  Pirates don't have rules they go by--so they don't deserve to be treated like they're reasonable human beings.  I'm amazed that some here debate over semantics whether marines are sailors and vice versa.  Are pirates sailors?

I wish the Great Leader resolves this by ordering our navy to obliterate these lower than low creatures.

The clock is ticking and what is being done? We are sending signals to the world that's watching. I wonder how Iran, N Korea, Russia and China view our inaction?

These "pirates" are small potatoes in the whole scheme of things. How would President Obama handle a terrorist attack on our soil?

Jon, we all have this sort of Peter Pan's Captain Hook image of pirates, which the Samali guys are beginning to dispel.

When you stand up for yourself and fight back, there is a lot less chance that something like this will happen again.  Other potential pirates take note and think twice before attacking. It's about time Americans fought back.

Rob-I am happy for the Capt. and glad he is not in danger anymore.  I heard today from the White House statement that obama gave the order to "rescue the Captian if his life were in danger"  it took obama and his administration 2 full days to decide what to do.

One of Hitlers biggest mistakes during WWII (no im not comparing obama to hitler in this post) was not allowing his generals to make troop movement decisions without checking in with him first.  The decision needed to be made in a matter of minutes or hours not days.

Mike - You mean if Obama goes there and talks them into submission? Interesting... i know he could, but for some reason I prefer a couple of snipers take care of the business.

William - you are , not me. I am still learning

Larry - he can, it simply strange that it takes him so ling. Does he have to consult all European and Middle Eastern leader, of just half would be fine? Dicisiveness is not only the will, but it is also timing. Come thing require immediate response. We have a bit of a problem with defining immediate

Stephanie - I would side with them, not you. If you hurt a pirate, it is a crime. You have to kill the pirate, don't hurt him. Then it is not a crime. Don't hurt him and don't hurt his feelings. Just shoot or hang, whichever raises less hell (LOL)

Yolanda - when I am writing this, I already know that the captain is freed. I would  feel much better if it took less time. Not for the preparation for the rescue, obviously. We gotta not only to be strong, but to look strong. Pirates were always outlaws, so destroy them, no mercy

Leslie - this is worrying many of us

Patricia - just imagine the massive operation of spealing from the most powerful nations in the world, and not be punished? To the point that they are trying to confront the Navy? Itis a shame, and if there would be no ransoms paid, there would be no reason to hijack the ships. What are the ransoms if not the reward for illegal behaviour. These guys have their stimulus package. In many-many millions.

Rob - exactly, you fight the pirates, not reward them. If instea don money they start getting bullets, you have a much smaller problem.

Larry - I agreee with you wholeheartedly. I do not think we needed to hear that Obama directed the military to act. This should have been decided without the intervention or control from the president. you touch us, you suffer. President should have better things to do.
