My Next Business Mixer is Coming up...

By
Real Estate Agent with Lyon Real Estate, Fair Oaks CA (Sacramento Area) DRE# 00809499

Next week I'm hosting my 2nd business mixer.  The first was a great success, in fact one gal said it was the best mixer she had ever been to.  I think it was because of the instructions they had received in advance.

  1. Bring business cards... a bunch.
  2. Come prepared with a few lines to specifically describe your business in a way that people will know how to refer you. (Saying you are a "tenant eviction attorney" lets me know how to refer you.  That you are an "attorney", leaves me not knowing where to go - how do I help you?)
  3. Spend no more than 10 minutes with each person... and don't just camp out with the most friendly set of eyes. (We are all guilty of this - it's uncomfy to start up with a stranger for most of us)
  4. Understand no one, except me, knows anyone else in the room.  You are not the only one who feels uncomfortable not knowing anyone.  You have permission to go up to a stranger without looking like you are hitting on them (and if you ARE hitting on them, cut it out!.. this isn't Match.com!)
  5. Make the purpose of your being here to learn about the other businesses and to find out how you can refer them to the type of clients they want... and to express how they can refer you.

My goal here is to build reciprocal referral relationships with my "go to" group - the companies and services I go to to get my job done.  Pest inspector, home inspector, contractor, paper hanger, landscaper, attorney etc.  You can check out my on-line referral directory at my web site www.SallyDunbar.com.  The link is on the left side (althoug you may need to disable pop-up blockers to make it work... I gotta deal with that.)

We'll be at Il Forno Classico, in Gold River, in their wine bar.  I'll let you know how it goes...

Sally,

I really like the approach of asking them how you can help them first. That way you are showing that it can be a mutual beneficial relationship. Great ideas and I will use the approach the next time I am at a networking event.

Hi Sally. I have done this business card blitz at several networking functions and they always are enjoyable to me. Sometimes someone hangs on to you and you want to move on to the next one. Almost like you need to ring a bell or something LOL. Good luck with it. Sounds very productive for you.

Mario - Yes - it's all about how I can help them, and how i can supprot their business.  I don't invite anyone I don't whole-heartedly endorse.

Gary - A bell is actually a good idea.  There are always a few who still feel uncomfortable leaving a warm set of eyes.  (And notice, I've lost my accent!)

Sally:  Great idea and great set of instructions.  I like how you let everyone know that it is okay to go up to a complete stranger.  Those situations certainly are uncomfortable to most folks.

Sally,

I went to one of these last week also and it was great!  When we were talking, I really felt listened to! When you are at one of these, it is a really excellent experience!

Taking time to really Hear other People, and think about how to help their businesses, also, remembering them as I go on my way and helping them in any way I can!
