You Never Know What's Around The Corner In An Old Mining Town

Restored Indian Motorcycle Co. billboard painted on side of a building in Bisbee, ArizonaA week ago, I spent part of a Sunday afternoon in Bisbee, Arizona.  While waiting to meet a client before we went to view the Loma Linda Mansion, I had a chance to wander down a side street, away from the tourist area for a few minutes - you never know what's around the corner in an old mining town!

First thing that caught my eye was an old Indian Motorcycle ad painted on the side of a building - someone has spruced it up and done a little restoration to it.  Made me think of my days in Durango, Colorado tending bar in a place dedicated & decorated with restored Indians & memorabilia (the bar stools were actually replicas of the saddle on the old Indian Chieftain model).  Cool!

As I wandered down to get a better angle to take a photo, I noticed this taxi.  One thing I love about the west, old mining towns in particular...is the wry sense of humor that underscores a hardscrabble life.  Think I'll let the taxi speak for itself:

Kent: Oh the joys of old mining towns. We used to travel west every summer when I was a kid. No set plans just two weeks on the road. I miss that. Thanks for your post, it brought back memories.

Thanks for blogging about Bisbee, Arizona.  For years I have been telling my husband that I would love to travel to that area, it looks like a very quaint town. :)

Matt - thanks for dropping by.  We did a lot of the same kind of vacations when I was a kid too!

Tony & Darcy - you did indeed read that right!

Cheron - If you do go...don't miss Cafe Roca (has gotten 5 stars!).  Tombstone's just down the road - yes, there really is a "Boot Hill" cemetery and the OK Corral is for real!

You nailed it Liz - Anthony Hopkins rode an Indian Scout model in his search for speed!

Ryan - if you ever get the chance: take the old coal-fired railroad from Durango, CO to Silverton.  Absolutely spectacular.  Don't wear a white shirt though!

Kent - is Bisbee anywhere near Jerome? I've spent some time in Arizona over the years but am not familiar with Bisbee. I love the Tuscon area, especially south toward the Mexican border and Nogales. Really beautiful countryside.

Hi Laura -

Bisbee is in Southern Arizona, about 1 1/2 hours from Tucson.  It is in historic Cochise County, about 20 minutes drive from Tombstone (of "Gunfight at OK Corral" fame).  You can see the Sierra Madre mountain range from parts of Bisbee.

Jerome is north of Phoenix, close to Sedona, Prescott and Flagstaff.

See the Google Maps below:

I hope that this is helpful to you, Laura!

The taxi and the Indian sign belong to Jay Allen, owner of the Broken Spoke Saloons around the USA. He lives in Bisbee. Many of his cars show up there at different times of year. That part of Bisbee is called Lowell.

Anytime anyone wants to visit look me up.
