Hard Drive Crash, or What I have Learned this week:

My hard drive crashed last week...I wrote about it in my newsletter

Here's a few of the things I learned

  1. Several of you shared good experiences with Mozy and Carbonite, both online backups and Norton Ghost. I think one of these will be the way for me to go.
  2. Even if you have backups...it isn't easy or fun to reinstall everything. I'd been using a Maxtor Drive for backup and there seems to be some compatibility issues with Vista that are giving us fits. Bottom line if their program isn't able to open and restore.
  3. I was thrilled I had Carolyne's Organizer (You too could get one from Carolyne [carolyne@carolyne.com]) because I've kept all my disks, and purchase information in one place.
  4. The old saying about if your hard drive hasn't crashed... it will, is one to believe.

I have been considering Carbonite for a long time.  I think you just motivated me to act.

I used CARBONITE to back up my computer and it was definitely easy to use.  Several months later, I lost a major file, over 4 GB of customer data.  When I went to Carbonite to get it back, I found out they had not backed this particular file up because of its size.  I  retraced my steps and could find no signs that this information was ever asked of me.  I AM NOT A FAN OF CARBONITE, THEY WON'T EVEN TALK TO ME ABOUT IT.

Glenn, what a bummer of a situation. I am familiar with Carbonite, too. I recently read that they had server crashes resulting in the loss of 7500 of their customer's data. At the time I was searching for a data backup service myself. After a little due-diligence, I discovered Mozy. It's a company that provides enterprise-level solutions to data loss, but with a small-business price-tag. Check it out at www.mozy.com.
