True Power

What is true power?  I view true power as having the power to counter an attack, either verbally, physically, mentally etc, and responding with only the force necessary to stop that attack.  I have read that most people can handle adversity, but to test a person's true character, give them power.  There are many times in which I am interacting with others in my field and when I respond to their requests (sometimes unreasonable) and questions without hesitation and without complaining, they seem to view my relaxed and happy-go-lucky attitude as weakness.  To mistake a person's kindness as weakness is a serious mistake and with my law enforcement background and now as a reserve, it can mean the difference between living and dying.

In your world, is it always necessary to have the last word?  To over respond to someone that thinks their right in a particular situation?  Or to constantly over justify yourself and your actions?  When someone calls you on the telephone and they are 100% wrong in what they are telling you.  How do you respond?  Even if they are pressing the issue and you reply with what is correct, they then understand, do you rub it in their face?

So, the ladder to the top is exciting, and it should be climbed one step at a time, but be careful of whom you step on while you ascend the ladder, you will be passing them on the way down.

This is an interesting subject>  As the owner of three successful businesses I have had to contemplate this matter on many occassions - and at the end of the day there are a couple thoughts that I keep telling myself.

  • You get more with honey rather than vinegar - as my gramp's used to preach, and practice.
  • There is a fine line between leading and commanding in an overbearing and abusive manner.
  •  We are all just human beings trying to accomplish our business and lead happy lives in what many times seems to be unfair and unequally balanced environments.

Those are just some of my thoughts.  Remember that every day is a new day :o)

Connor... kindness is not a weakness. In some cases, kindness takes an incredible amount of strength. It's easy to be kind when others are being kind to you. It's much harder when the opposite is true. There is tremendous power in kindness. Great post.

Connor... you should post this in a couple of other groups. I think it's worth people finding!
