Congratulations go out to pole sitter and winner: the little jockey, Mark Martin.  He's one of the nicest and most humble men in all of NASCAR.  He SO deserved it.  He was definitely the dominating car at Saturday night's race.  He was the winner at the first NASCAR race I ever attended.  So, it was lovely to see him win and get his 400th Top 10 finish of his career.  That being said, I have to tell you..that was the most painful experience watching a race that I have ever had the displeasure of watching.  As you all know, I am a HUGE Jeff Gordon fan.  So, to watch my guy go from a solid 3rd place to almost two laps down because someone missed a lug nut burst my bubble real quick.  His pit crew continually got him out of the pits at least two positions down from when he entered, too.  I don't think Jeff had the car to win on Satuday (that was ALL Mark Martin), but I think he could have had another great top 5 finish.  Jeff finished 25th but still retains an healthy 85 point lead in overall points.  Good ol' Smoke tried as hard as he could to get his first win this season, too, but just came up short.  Tony Stewart has been doing amazing as an owner/driver this year.  So much better than others we have seen try this lately (*cough* Michael Waltrip *cough*).  And speaking of Michael Waltrip, I said an out loud "Oh no you di'n't" when Robbie Gordon commented about how he couldn't wait until next year to see who was taking over the #55 spot.  You can always count on a hot-headed Robbie Gordon to make your jaw drop.  I guess that's why we love him so much!

Another high/low light of the evening was when Dale Earnhardt Jr's car's handling completely left him.  Now, he had been sideways several laps before he actually his the wall.  And, the camera angle they showed didn't make it clear whether the handling got away from him again before he hit the wall or if Casey Mears bumped him.  But, being an Earnhardt, I guess it was only natural for him to give Mears a "love tap" (if you will) on the "not-so-cool down lap".  And, being a red-neck sport that we all love so much, Mears retaliated with a few "love taps" of his own to let Junior know that it wasn't OK with him.  I can't wait to see what Junior has to say about that at all.  These are what makes NASCAR good old fashioned redneck fun.  I'll see you Sunday, April 26th at 1pm ET on FOX to watch NASCAR race on the fastest track in the series: Talladega.  Yay!

Winners of the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway on 4/18/09:

1. Mark Martin (#5)

2. Tony Steward (#14)

Heather if Mr Martin(Mark) wouldn't have won it would have been just a crying shame ...his car was fastest in both practices he got the pole and his car hauler was fastest on the interstate..he and his car were hooked up...I don't think anybody was up set he won....even Tony came to congratulate him...As for Jr he should just go back to nationwide if he can't handle it with the big boys...I couldn't tell if Mears got him or not but rubbin is racin ....And Robbie was funny .... I think it was a pretty good race and lots of bad mouthing and smashin of the cars even after the race helped make it better...But that's me I like the wrecks and the mouthyness and the drama....Heather great post on the race...peace zane

I agree, Zane.  I understand the "rubbin' is racin'" philosophy.  I don't agree that "wreckin' is racin'".  I thought it was just sour grapes over a poorly handled car that got Jr upset.  Mears just gave him a reason to let off some steam (in Jr's head, anyway).  I don't agree with it.  Robbie's comments were typical Robbie.  I don't expect to ever see him win a race (he's just not on par with Tony, Jeff, Jimmie, Carl, Greg, etc).  But, he's such a character that it's worth having him in the race.  Gotta love him.

you are right about Jr....although I think Robbie ...if he can have a good car may win at a road course because he has come close a few times but had mechanical problems toward the end of the race....I like Robbie and his attitude he is a character and a racer that don't give up even when his car does....peace zane

I adore Robbie because he is so outspoken and doesn't give a hoot what anyone else thinks.  That's what makes him Robbie.  I think I like him because he isn't arrogant about it, unlike Kyle Busch.  That's ALL arrogance.  Can't stand that.
