Sunset at GlenMar Ranch in Caddo, OK

The herd comes a-running when they think they're going to get fed! This was our sunset this evening. The location is GlenMar Ranch in Caddo, OK.

My Darlin' and I come out here every April, and have been doing so since 1996. Working cows is so unlike everything I do the rest of the year that it's a vacation to work the spring roundup.

It used to take us more than a week of hard work--my friend Dick Carson and I--to get everything done. Now we hope to be done in two or three long days. Shots, medical attention, fly tags, ear tags, banding the bull calves to make little steers out of them....

Mike - I am SO jealous! I miss doing the roundups. But when I did them they were on my own farm. So it really was work for me. LOL

We never banded the young guys - we just snipped and pasted them. Was over a lot quicker, they got their attitudes adjusted instantly, and everyone was happy. That is ... until ... it was time to do laundry. I always had to hose off my clothes in the barn before I could take them to the washer.

Enquiring minds want to know ... Do you carry your camera in your pocket? Wear it on a neckstrap? Have it tied to the saddle? I would suppose roundup time could be pretty hazardous to a little camera .....:-)

I strap it to my overalls. My friends have WiFi now, so I'm blogging unexpectedly (and happily.) I did lose a camera in a pasture a few years ago. Found it a year later, none the worse for wear.

I'm careful about those hooves! The girls never get dirty; they leave the cow manure to us. Dick got hit in the face with a crappy tail this morning first thing. "Oklahoma floss" was what he said as he wiped his face. LOL

Laura,

No elk in Oklahoma that I know of. We did see whitetail deer today, and wild turkeys.

When I was a kid between high school and college, I worked on a dairy farm (one mile square) owned by Happy Rockefeller in upstate New York. When my friend Dick retired from the USAF and decided to do this for a living, I took a vacation in 1996 and helped him work his herd in the spring. I've done it every year since.
