NBA Play-offs - Who are you pulling for?

This is one of my favorite times of the year.  In the first round of the NBA Play-offs, there is a game(s) on each day of the week.  No matter what is going on in business or my personal life, I can always find time to watch my games (if I am not home, I always DVR!)

Here are the three match-ups I am most interested in, although there are many good match-ups (and some you should not waste your time watching)

  • Dallas Mavericks vs San Antonio Spurs (Dallas leading 1-0)
  • Los Angeles Lakers vs Utah Jazz (Lakers leading 1-0)
  • Boston Celtics vs Chicago Bulls (Chicago leading 1-0)

I am originally from Massachusetts and grew up watching the Celtics and Lakers (Bird and Magic).  I carry the same Celtic keychain that was given to over 20 years ago.  I should HATE the Lakers... but I don't.  I grew to really enjoy watching 'Showtime', especially when I moved to California in 1984 (in the middle of the Celtic/Laker rivalry).

Now that I live in Frisco Texas (and even a few years before I moved to Texas) I have been a big Maverick fan.  Many had doubts about the Jason Kidd trade, but I've watched this guy since he was playing for CAL in college.  He is a great team player and exciting for me to watch.

So, now I watch the three series and really enjoy the fact that none of them are facing each other.  I can pull for all three teams to move onto the next round.  Still crossing my fingers on the Celtic vs Bulls match-up.  The Bulls pulled out the first win in Overtime, led by the Rookie 'Rose' with 36 points and 11 assists.  A great game to watch, with a disappointing ending.

The Lakers will have an easy SWEEP against Utah, and hopefully Dallas can remain focused against the Spurs (sorry San Antonio fans.. we can still be friends though).  I am hoping to see Dallas / Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.  And in the West, if the Celtics do not make it, I am hoping to see Orlando against the Cavs.

I hope you enjoy the play-offs like I do.  If you don't then thanks for still reading this post.  :-)

I'm not really a huge NBA fan, but I do occasionally check in.  I'd like to see the Cavs do well if only for the fact that it might keep LeBron in Cleveland.

Well --- we're in California.   Gotta love those Lakers.  In the end, we love watching a good game, no matter who is playing (but it does help if it's "your" team).

Harry - I have not heard anything about Shaq coming here.  It would be quite interesting.  Shaq is surrounded by a solid group of players now, its just that the West is a hard division.  An argument can certainly be made that he is a dominant player still and has a few more years in him.  He played well this year, but they had no defense.  Mark Cuban is a gambling man, but I dont think he would pull Shaq here.

Erik - Lebron ran his mouth a little too much about his team earlier this year.  They had a GREAT regular season and picked up a few solid players before the trade deadline.  Seems like his teammates have really picked things up this year.  It will be interesting to see if he sticks around.  I dont want them to win  :-)

Haven't watched since Hakeem retired. I know, I'm a horrible "viewer" of basketball. I only watch the Finals. Not really a fan anymore. I'd love for a team in TX to win though.

John:  the Mavs and the Spurs series should be a real barn-burner.  Being from the new home of the Tarrant County Cowboys... LOL... I would love to see the Mavs just break the lil hearts of the Spurs.  The first game was great.

Watching the Celtics and the Bulls game... what a great game.  I am from Cleveland... and it hurt to see the Cavs lose to the Celtics last year.  It's not that I don't "like" the Celtics... but I can remember one time... when changing planes in Logan Airport in Boston... way back in the days of the great Celtics-Lakers rivalry... that I walked into a store inside the airport that was just FILLED with Celtics stuff... and... just for fun... complained mildly, but in a loud voice... asking "hey... why don't you have any Lakers jerseys ?"  It was so fun just standing there watching all the evil stares that came my way.

I would love to see the Jazz beat the Lakers... but only in my dreams.  It was great seeing the 76ers beat the Magic today... very much fun.

And then there is Cleveland.  What an exciting game they played against the Pistons.  I very much hope they make it to the Finals... and then win the championship.  But... just like most Clevelanders... I remember the times the Browns and the Indians choked in the past... and all the heart-breaking times the Cavs lost to the Bulls back the last time the Cavs had a decent team.  I am really pulling for Cleveland to win.  I really like how... even though LeBron is such a great player... I really love his supporting cast this year.  Lots of other favs... Mo, Varejao, Big Z, Boobie, Joe Smith, Delonte West, Wally Szczerbiak, and even Ben Wallace... who I have really found myself rooting for when he has been in the game.

There ya have it... my sports report.  Thanks for the post... which gave me a place to talk about the Finals.  Take care...

Shaq in Dallas next year ?  Geez I hope not.  What a major mistake that would be.  I would not want to give up ANYONE for him in a trade... not even one of the ball boys or ball girls.  Noper.

John - the Mavs did look solid the other night and not even on their own court ... maybe this will be the year to remove distractions and take the championship.  Have a great week and happy watching.

Hockey is my game.  I love seeing the players get pushed up against the walls.

Just kidding.

I don't watch sports unless it is gymnastics or figure skating.  Every now and then I like a good race car event especially when the cars crash and explode.  Now that is worth watching.

My wife always likes teams from Chicago, and I am a Bull's fan. So, I guess we will try and pull for them even though I usually don't worry about it until the championship game.

Greg - Since Hakeem?

WOW Karen - That is a lot of information.  I can see that you and I would be able to carry a sport conversation just fine.  How dare you say anything about a Laker uniform when they were rivals with the Celtics.  LOL  Im surprised you made it out okay.  As for the Orlando series, not too happy about the outcome but it was a good game.  76ers played better than they I thought they would have.  Lakers WILL sweep the Jazz (maybe they will go 5 games, but thats it).  Would like to see the Mavs make it to at least the 2nd round, same with Denver.  But I do not see the Lakers losing this year, especially if they are facing the Cavs in the finals (my personal feeling).  As for the Shaq thing.. I had not heard of it.  It was a comment made.  You never know though  HA

Caren - Im sure they will make it far this year.  They had a great regular season, so I can not imagine they will go down without a fight.

Connie - I would like to see the Mavs make it this year.  There was a lot said about the Jason Kidd trade.  The team is playing better together, which is important.  But I am not positive if they believe they can win it all.  Until they do, they will fall at some point.  It would be nice for them to win it soon.

Angelia - Nascar?  Although I do hear how excited it makes some people, I am not a nascar fan.  There is nothing wrong with it really, except its boring to me.  Same with Figure Skating... B - O - R - I - N - G  (okay, I just did that for you  :-)    Figure Skating is not for me though.  I can watch some gymnastics, but it has to be eventful.  Not all competitions are exciting to watch.  Im sure, like nascar and figure skating, I am just not seeing the beauty.

JL - The way they played Boston, I could see them going places.  During the regular season I did not see them playing this well.  Even without Garnett for the Celtics, I thought for sure the Bulls would lose.  But that Rose kid played VERY well.  Maybe he can continue playing that way.  I use to be a HUGE Chicago fan, but that was during the Jordan days.  Bought the jerseys, tickets when they played out home team, etc.  Jordan could have played for the Clippers and I would have been a HUGE Clippers fan (before you ask... yes, I did buy a Wizards jersey when he came back).

Paul - I thought it was an interesting move for the Sonics (now Thunder) owner.  Perhaps it made a lot of sense to him, but we will see...  As for Phoenix - I like Nash and Shaq, so I was pulling for them to get into the play-offs.  It was a close race to the 8th spot, but unfortunately they fell a little short.  Maybe next year.
