Bright Lights, Big City - Active Rain at 145,000+

Mortgage and Lending with Cherry Creek Mortgage Illinois Residential Mortgage License LMB #0005759 Cherry Creek Mortgage NMLS #: 3001 NMLS ID# 158606

So now we're at 145,000+ members on Active Rain.  145,000 people.  That's no small village.  I did a population search and we're now somewhere between the size of Kansas City, Kansas and Vancouver, Washington.  Interspersed between those cities How to stand out in a citysit Rockford, Illinois, Oceanside, California, Springfield, Missouri and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  For fun, I'll throw in Dayton Ohio too!

Needless to say, these are sizeable cities.  I think that there's a lot of anonimity in those those numbers.  When I first joined the rain, I believe that I was in a community of less than 25,000 people.  I like small communities.  There's something very small, very quaint and very personal about them.  They're just fun, very cozy, and just so great for people to really know each other a lot.  It's so much more personal than cities the size of the 145,000 member communities.

When you get to the size of 145,000 members, how do you stand out?  At the other end of the spectrum, we now have 145,000 members all in real estate or in some related industry.  Standing out and getting noticed is as difficult as ever. The members of Active Rain want to get noticed within the community of Active Rain as well as in the social media that exists for the general public.  TWO MAJOR GOALS for true engagers within the Active Rain community.

Needless to say, THERE ARE A LOT OF BENEFITS to being part of aLARGE COMMUNITY, especially when that community is so like minded.

1)  If you're featured, you have something great to say.  Great people recognize it and others can learn from a great post as well.  The featured post just lets all the others know that something great was said.  If you're featured in a community this size...savor it.  You're recognized for your talent at that moment.

2)  The competition isn't amongst each member of Active Rain. There is a competition, but it's really against the others in your field within your local community and your specialty.  There really is no one better with SEO than the gurus who operate Activer Rain.  I have had so much success in Active Rain that I got rid of my personal website.  That's huge for me!!!!  The bottom line is that if you have some great posts and some great tags, you'll be all over google at just the right spots at just the right time.  I have received 36 referrals since joining Active Rain. Some things in small communities aren't so great

3)  A large Active Rain community means that you have more peer resources  that otherwise would not have been available in a small community.  A small community is quaint, but the resources that you have from a smaller community

If there was one sin about Active Rain, it's that some people joined Active Rain a long time ago, but had never posted since then.  In other words, we have a lot of "members" who give us a false security of size...and the reality is that we don't have that size.  I'm curious as to how many active members exist in Active Rain.

Needless to say, large communities have issues.  I frankly don't like them.  I live in a community that has grown from just over 7,000 people to now just over 31,000 and it seems like 3.1 million.  In Active Rain, this largre community, has really blossomed into something huge, but it's huge...not just in size, but huge in what it has to offer it's members.

What a great observation.  I'm still here and have been here for quite a while.  It's refreshing to see the newbies, and it's sad to see that those who were with us years ago are gone.

The survivors are here and it's great to see a common element.

Larry, you are so right.  There are benefits and some not-so-good things tha come about with growth.  I have found in other groups that 10% of the group is usually what is keeping the group growing... I agree, it would be interesting to know what the percentag of active members are.

Well Larry,

If this doesn't become a featured post, I'd be surprised.  I will certainly flag it as such. It's well thought out and well written.  If you don't get a star I will give you one (or three) lol.

Great point with #2 - "The competition isn't amongst each member of Active Rain." One of the strengths of this community (and a big reason why it has grown so large) is that we treat each other as colleagues, not competitors.

Larry...  yes, AR is large and there are so many new people. I am sure some are scared, because it's hard to get recognized more now than once before. But even though there are 145,000, I would bet it's less than 8% that are truly active right now. I would go as far as less than 5%. I haven't been on as much, but it would be an educated guess. It would be interesting to get an idea though.

Competitive?  I would feel opposite about it. I see that several compete against others in here.  I can at least sense it.  But me, now?  I just know by writing good blogs, that it helps me to get searched more on the net. I have picked up like 6 very solid leads just this month because of blogging.

Hi Larry, I'm with you - I prefer small towns. But being in a large community like ActiveRain is wonderful and there is so much here to share and learn.  This is one large community I am glad to be a part of!

I liken it to my church which is very large. It's impossible to get to know everyone, but that's why there are small groups so you can get to know a few people intimately. On AR, I've been drawn to certain folks and enjoy getting to know them through their posts.

Larry, this is a real nice post. We've only been on here since Dec so certainly haven't seen the growth like you have, but enjoy being on AR and realize the huge benefits.

Larry, just like joining a big church with thousands of members, here in the rain, you have to join groups to feel more a part. That really connects you to folks. Just like small group bible studies etc... if not it can be noisy and lonely.

I joined in Dec 06 and many of the same people that I connected to at first are gone, so you have to constantly engage new folks too.
