Hey! Where Are You Going?

In this day and age, one can always look up information about a place on the Internet. Looking up interesting facts about local demographics, school data, crime rates, etc. can be pretty tedious, and oftentimes one can make a decision about moving to a place based upon that data alone.

Of course, negative publicity about an area will always have an impact on it. That's a given.

Whoa! Hold on a second, will ya? I know, I know - Waterbury has indeed gotten its share of bad press, but that's no reason to run screaming from it.

Indeed, there are many wonderful things about the city of Waterbury that I can't begin to describe. Who can better give you a sense of what it's like to live here but someone who actually does, and has most of their life? Seriously, a first-hand perspective from a resident who is not a government official either running for office or trying to boost their business would be a welcome addition to the plethora of information out there about a place.

Thus, I begin an on-going series on the virtues and attractions of the place that I call home.

Where to begin: For the exercise enthusiast, the hills of Waterbury offer an excellent opportunity to get in shape. After all, what better exercise is there than walking uphill and downhill? The scenery is beautiful, especially in the spring and fall, and the weather tends to hold up pretty well.

Then, of course, there is the food. Of the many places unique to Waterbury, three stand out: Louie's Pizza, Castle Restaurant, and Amalfi's.

All three places have one thing in common: they are all pizza establishments. What makes them special, however, is not their pizza, but the other menu items that they offer.

For Louie's, located two storefronts east of the Palace Theater, they offer the best gyros Greek sandwichin town, bar none.

For Castle Restaurant, located right before the entrance of Chase Plaza on Chase Avenue, they have the best chicken marsala and stuffed shells one could ask for (their pizza is the best of the local restaurants as well, imho).

MenuFor Amalfi's, aslo located on Chase Avenue - they have the best grinders in town. Whether hot or cold, they make their bread/rolls for their sandwiches on the premises fresh, and the bread has a taste that is out of this world. Ever since I discovered it several years ago, I haven't gotten a grinder from any other place.

To be continued....

Hi William: I love the 1st picture - great shot - you can see St. Mary's Hospital, Waterbury Hospital and the clock tower too!  You must have taken that from the Holy Land - correct?

:)
