Cow talking backLenn Harley got to laughing at me "working cows."  I told Bessie here, and she took exception.  I shoulda' had video with a sound track!  (You can imagine what she's saying!)

Lightning backlights the clouds over Caddo, OK

We had a lightning show the first night we were here (Saturday) and I got a lucky shot of one of the clouds backlit by a bolt of lightning.

Three of us started out this morning at 7:00 a.m.  We worked the replacement heifers on the Eighty.

They get number tags in the left ear to identify them, and that orange tag in the right ear is called a "fly tag."  It's loaded with an insecticide to keep the flies away.  We replace the fly tags in the spring, and the number tags when they're no longer readable at a distance.

The herd is semi-wild, as they have 1,400 acres to roam during most of the year.  In order to get them to cooperate, we herd them into pens and then into a chute with a "head-gate."

The calves are my Darlin's favorite.  This little bull calf knows he's good looking!  :)

Aren't I pretty?

Hi Mike...What a wonderful thing, to be able to roam 1400 acres.  They are pretty lucky, at least for awhile.

That young one is good looking.

Hi Mike!
I think that is so cool...I never knew that the tags could shoo away flies.  Can I wear one during the summer?  ;o)

Hi Mike, Thanks for stopping by my blog.  I love helping to work our cattle.  Our cows get new tags when they lose the ones that are in their ears.  Heifers are in the left ear and bulls in the right ear.  Steers do not get one because they are going to hamburger anyway.... sorry...    Ok, now what camera are you using????    We live on Grandpa's farm that he bought in 1944 but the cows do not know that!  Be Careful!  Cows are always unpredictable and do exactly what they are not supposed to.   Most of ours are black brangus.

Looks to me that you're spending more time taking photos than being a cowboy! Whatever, have fun.

Cowboy Mike,

Great to see your enjoying some R and R on your vacation. Always working on something! We hit 95 in the desert today. It was great to have a taste of summer. To live here is to love it. God bless you and Ginny! See you next week.

Started out at 0700?  You slackers!  LOL  You should have been at least half done by then!  ;)

I am still so jealous that you and your darlin' are out there having good old fashioned fun.  My hubby would attempt it, but being an engineer and having that analytical mindset, he would spend the first 3 days trying to come up with a better plan.  LOL

Enjoy yourselves, be safe and give all the 'girls and boys' a pat on the head for me.  :)

Mike, it looks like spring is in full bloom in Oklahoma.  To help you appreciate it, we had about 2 feet of snow here in Castle Rock, CO, last weekend!  :-)

Aww. Poor cow has an awfully big tag in his ear. That must be annoying for him. I know it's common, but I still feel sorry for him =(  I always stop and pet the cows around here. They're so sweet =)

Oh, even though I feel sorry for the cow, you always write great Localism posts. So you have another feature in the Things to Do/Places to Visit group.

Mike,

It sounds as tho you are going to have another good time in Caddo.  BTW, will the little bull calf replace Taffy at some time?

Mikw,

39 may know he's looking good, but he doesn't know what you and Dick have planed for him or he'd climb that fence!

Keep your legs crossed and your camera ready.
