Babcock & Miles – Merchants of the Delectable

Babcock & Miles LogoThere is a new speciality food and wine store in town.  It's called Babcock & Miles!  Red Lodge is lucky to have its own gourmet food and wine shop.

The following is a partial list of some of their many food and wine offerings.  They have a wide assortment of cheeses, crackers, charcuterie, antipasti, oils, vinegars, coffees and teas.  They have a wonderful selection of European and domestic artisan cheese including many from smaller European providers.  Their charcuterie includes duck prosciutto, jambon de bayonne, saucisson sec, pheasant and vegetable terrine, and mousse truffee as well as many other pates and meats.  They have beautiful cuts of frozen duck breast, rabbit, and veal chops for delicious vacation gatherings.  Their wine department includes a broad selection of wines from France, Italy, California and the Pacific Northwest.  They also have wines from South America, New Zealand, and Australia.  Their newest additions include a wide selection of speciality beers, daily fresh baked bread, and coffee drinks.

On Saturday, February 7, 2009, I attended the first cheese tasting organized by Karen and Drew Porth, the owners of Babcock & Miles.  Not only did we sample delicious cheeses, but the staff was very courteous and took the time to educate attendees about the various processes involved in making cheese.  The hosts also threw in a book, The Murray's Cheese Handbook by Rob Kaufelt, as a parting gift.  The book is a great source of information for more than 300 of the world's best cheeses.  It was a very fun and educational event.

Babcock & Miles also launched a 3 part wine tasting series on March 26 (white wines), April 1 (red wines) and April 8 (wines of the world).   These tastings took place at The Pollard hotel.  I was able to attend the last one and was pleasantly surprised at the number of selections we had to taste (over a dozen).   Lee is the wine expert at Babcock and he had a presentation (photos, maps and info on each wine) to educate the attendees about the various locations of the wines of the world as well as the appearance of the grapes.  The actual bottles were also passed around the tables for the guests to get familiar with the packaging and presentation of the wines.   This tasting event as well as the previous two were a success.  Expect more wine tasting events by Babcock & Miles in the near future!

Dan and Amy,

Thank you for the positive comments.  Not only are their wine tasting events fun, but the owners and staff go out of their way to make sure everyone attending has a great time and enjoys the tasting.  They go the extra step to have a plate per table filled with cheese, crackers, grapes and other savoury things to nibble on during the tasting.

Hi Gerry, I should go to a wine tasting and sample the variety. I ususally find one or two wines that I like and just buy them all the time.  I'm missing out - but don't want to buy a whole bottle of something I won't like.  Your Babcock and Miles sounds like a wonderful place to try!

Mary,

Do you prefer reds or whites?   Babcock & Miles makes a great addition to our town.  I recommend anyone visiting our town to visit their store and discover their great wine selection and gourmet food.

Gerry I prefer reds, and usually buy Yellow Tail - Cab-Merlot.  I see a lot more expensive wines, which I might buy for a special occasion - but not for everyday - and definitely not for a trial run :-)

What were some of the ones you got to try that you liked?

Paul,

You are welcome.  Besides the local grocery store (Beartooth Market) and the liquor store (Carbon County Coal Wine and Spirits), we also have a restaurant (Cafe Regis) which sells some gourmet food and another restaurant (Bridge Creek Backcountry Kitchen & Wine Bar) which sells wine.  But, Babcock & Miles is a great addition to our little town and here in Red Lodge we appreciate the added selection when it comes to specialty food and quality wines and I am sure the visitors will like it too.

Mary,

I prefer reds as well.   At the wine tasting that took place on April 8, 2009, the ones that I got to try and liked were the 2003 Domaine Charbonniere (Chateauneuf du Pape, France) and the 2007 Tres Picos Garnacha (Campo de Borja, Spain).   These were both red wines.   However, we tried several white wines as well and I also liked the 2006 Cascina Luet Arneis (Piedmont, Italy) which did not have any smell but I was pleasantly surprised by the very intense taste.   In this wine 101: unique wines of the world, we got to try wines from many other country/places such as Germany (2004 Markus Molitor Kabinett, white wine), Argentina (2007 Crios Torrontes, white wine and 2007 Furque Malbec, red wine), South Africa (2006 M'hudi Pinotage, red wine), Chile (2006 Santa Ema Merlot and 2006 Arenal Carmenere, red wines) and California (2006 Qupe Syrah).  It was a world trip for the taste buds and a memorable one!

Thom and Ray,

We are still a small city (population of about 2,400 people) but it's ok to have some sophistication especially when it comes to wines and great food.  It is nice to find some tasty treasures in a small town like Red Lodge.  Babcock & Miles has a lot of treasures to be discovered by your taste buds and lives up to its name as Merchants of the Delectable.  Thank you for coming by to comment.

Thanks Gerry, I'm going to keep your list -- perhaps pick up a new bottle or two when I'm in town!
