I think everyone knows that housing prices are down, unless you never watch TV or pick up a newspaper. Well if you live in Jefferson Parish or Orleans Parish what you might not know is that the local assessor's office reassesses property every four years. Jefferson did theirs in 2008 and Orleans updated theirs in 2007. Well the assessor uses prior sales to determine assessments. So what's the problem?  Those years were some of the highest values EVER for this area. If you bought your home in the time frame of 2000-2007 more than likely your assessment is the same as the day you purchased the property if not higher. The market is down and guess what? Your property assessment is NOT!! That means you're stuck with the assessment for the next 2 to 3 years, unless you get an appraisal. That's where G.N.O.
