Sanibel Island is a 12-mile long island, which you can get to by crossing a causeway from Fort Myers.  From Sanibel, you can head to Captiva Island by crossing a bridge.  Captiva Island is much smaller than Sanibel, but both are very popular among those headed for retirement..

Both islands are comprised of wildlife refuges.  But, if you're looking for a Sanibel vacation home, be prepared to fork out some dough.  It's the price that you pay to live in paradise.  You can walk or bike the islands and see the beauty that lies within the refuges.  Kayak down both fresh and salt waterways.  Or, collect shells along the beach.  This could be really fun to do with th kids.

Sanibel's most famous landmark, the Sanibel Lighthouse, is at the eastern end of the island.  It's close to a fishing pier.  So, explore the lighthouse, and then grab a pole and catch some good fish!
