New swine flu in Mexico has Pandemic Potential

Wow have you read about this yet?  There is a new severe flu in Mexico that is deadly and spreading.

Currently the World Health Organization's alert level is at phase 3 but spokesman Gregory Hartl said it is likely that the alert level will be raised to 4 or 5 because there is now evidence that the virus is spreading between people!  The World Health Organization Director-General Margaret Chan has called an emergency meeting today to consider declaring an international public health emergency.  If the World Health Organization does declare an international public health emergency then they will consider measures including travel advisories, trade restrictions and border closures.

So far the World Health Organization is reporting 62 deaths in Mexico.  So far Mexico has closed schools, museums, libraries and theaters in an attempt to contain the outbreak, which may have sickened about 1,000 people there.

This new virus, dubbed the "swine flu" is an animal strain of the H1N1 virus called A/H1N1.

This is a news story to keep your eye on.

Matt, living in New Mexico and having the rest of my family only about 45 miles from the US/Mexico border, we always hope "what happens in Mexico stays in Mexico" but air borne disease probably doesn't differentiate.  I refuse to live in cataclysmic fear but will take extra measures to wash my hands, keep my immune system up with a watchful eye on any health alerts.  All we can do.

Hi Robert: All I have read says it is a "severe flu".  That makes it hard to tell if you ask me.  Sorry I can't be of more help.

I just read about this a few hours ago on Yahoo...I don't watch much TV, especially news.  This new strain really scares me, and its already in the States.  I think I'll be watching alittle more TV to keep track of the spread of this virus.

A couple of years ago I did a presentation at my Toastmasters club about the then rising threat of Bird Flu (H5N1). The CDC and WHO have been moving behind the scenes for the past three years getting ready for a pandemic, because it's a matter of when, not if. The bird flu poses the greatest threat, because all of the most virulent human influenzas had a bird flu component, as does this current swine flu threat. This one could be the plague that we have been expecting. A high school in New York just reported 6 cases a couple of hours ago. Get ready.

Hi Michael: Oh geez!  Here's something to chew on:

1918: Spanish Flu

The Spanish Influenza pandemic is the catastrophe against which all modern pandemics are measured. It is estimated that approximately 20 to 40 percent of the worldwide population became ill and that over 50 million people died. Between September 1918 and April 1919, approximately 675,000 deaths from the flu occurred in the U.S. alone. Many people died from this very quickly. Some people who felt well in the morning became sick by noon, and were dead by nightfall. Those who did not succumb to the disease within the first few days often died of complications from the flu (such as pneumonia) caused by bacteria.

The thought of a pandemic and stats like that are absolutely terrifying!!  One can only hope that with more modern medicine (even though this is a virus so no cure), a better medical knowledge, and better quarantine plans...that this could be better controlled and the lose of life would not be as great as the 1918 outbreak.  Those of us who have Faith...best thing to do is PRAY!!

Thanks too from me to Suma for the link. Trivia: When some one sneezes, and we say, "Bless You!", started during the 1918 pandemic. Often that sneeze was the first sign of catching the flu, and they could be dead in a matter of hours later. The 1918 spanish flu took over a year to become the virulent strain that it did. Not certain, but believed to have begun near Kansas, travelled to the French-Spanish war theater. WWl helped it spread worldwide with returning soldiers, then exploded, primarily killing the most healthy individuals. Apparently, a strong immune system caused the virus to strengthen its attack. I could go on and on, but mercifully, I'll stop ranting!

Hi Michael: The fact that the 1918 pandemic was more deadly to people who were healthy is amazing.  I understand that that is one of the reason this flu is scaring people - because it is not the weak that are being affected it is primarily those that are 18-50!

I got a kick out of all the conservatives and Fox calling for soldiers to be stationed at the border to keep the illegal immigrants out since they are the ones spreading the swine flu as they come across the border. One even said that it was the work of terrorists, purposefully infecting Mexicans and then sending them across the border. Sheesh. Why are those people not writing science fiction books instead of telling us the news?
