Wildfire in Southeastern Arizona

Wildfire near Dos Cabesas, AZ

We crossed the state line from New Mexico into Arizona yesterday at about 4:00, coming home from GlenMar Ranch in Oklahoma.  It wasn't long before we could see the smoke of a wildfire in the distance.  I called 911, and they put me in touch with State Forestry.

I pulled over at the exit nearest the location of the fire to take photos.  I emailed this and one other to KVOA Channel 4, and made the 10:00 news!

The fire is on BLM land near the ghost town of Dos Cabezas.  As I write this morning, I don't know the outcome.  The wind was blowing pretty hard yesterday afternoon.

When I find out more, I'll let you know.

Wow Mike, That is an excellent photo. If it wasn't for you putting a time factor on the event of the photo, it looks timeless.

Hey, you should have called me on Sunday and I could meet you for lunch, O well, maybe next time.

Mike,

I think I'll go do something positive!

I spotted smoke once. I was with a friend flying low and slow in an old Piper Pacer. My friend had missed one tower on his power line patrol. Before radioing in the smoke report we over flew it. As we did slow turns about a point below campers were waving and pointing, in the plane that wonderful smell of steak nearly ready, filled the cockpit. I'm sure we'd have been welcome, but the biggest clearing was only 50 feet across. Please, forgive the nostalgia. I miss Michigan! You never know what reaction, what emotion your photos will spawn.

Mike--It is scary to see that smoke across the sky when you know that is a fire that could spread rapidly!

I'm glad you reported the fire.  Hopefully it got contained quickly.  Course, we have fires pretty often here.  This small one happened about a week ago near my daughter's school.  http://www.ocregister.com/articles/fire-palm-chrisanta-2369705-county-tree

Glad you called it in.  Most folks would figure someone already called and they would keep driving.  So now you're a star???  Can I have your autograph?  LOL

Mike - I like that large bird in the foreground. . .It's almost as if it is sounding the alarm.  I hope the fire has come under control.

All,

Thanks for commenting!  A followup story tonight on the 10:00 news aired the photos again (with a credit) and named the fire the "Dos Cabezas Fire."  It's not out yet, and has charred more than 300 acres.

Hi Mike: How you ever got that bird to fly in front of the smoke to get that nice silhouette is beyond me!

Ann,

I'll just pat myself on the back and hope I don't pull a muscle.  LOL

Karen,

Thanks for commenting!

Matt,

What you can't see out of the photo to the right is the hawk chasing that raven.  Wish I'd have gotten the hawk too.

JD,

I called 911 to report the fire.  It was Ginny's idea to send in the photos to KVOA.  They ran it!
