In a stunning development this afternoon (Wednesday, April 29th, 2009), the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordered a Reassessment of Allegheny County Properties (which includes the City of Pittsburgh). This order requires the reassessment to occur for next year. The court ruled that the county's statute that set the 2002 values as the baseline for taxation was illegal. The court continued on to say that the statute made some properties to be unfairly taxed.
In most cases, this ruling will also affect a ruling earlier this year by Washington County's President Judge Debbie O'Dell Seneca who ordered Washington County to begin a reassessment of its own, depending the outcome of this ruling by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
I will be sure to post more as additional information is provided over the next few days and weeks.
This is a very intriguing story!
Cheers!
