Weekend before last, my husband and I had occasion to drive up IH-35 and through Austin. I don't
remember the last time I was in Austin; it must have been 5 years ago. As we crossed the bridge over the Guadalupe River and the Austin skyline came into view, I was stunned by the breathtaking sight of all the construction cranes dotting the skyline of our state's capitol city. It reminded me of the skyline of Houston in Houston's heyday back in the late 1970's and early 1980's.
I had noticed Jason Crouch's post, Austin was the Second-Fastest Growing City in the U.S. for 2007-2008, and thought of that as we passed through Austin. I would have taken photos of this amazing and unexpected crane forest but my camera was in the trunk of the car so I decided to take pictures on the way back home.
On the way back home, I slept until we got to Round Rock and was too sleepy to have my husband stop so that I could snap photos. I found a couple of puny-by-comparison Austin crane photos on the internet but this is not what I saw. What I saw was growth, vitality, prosperity. Here's to you, Austin!
