A Little Lesson on Scale: No Pun Intended

By
Home Stager

A home that we recently staged had a nice size entry way. But the entry table and mirror were of such small proportion, that it didn’t do justice to the house. The feeling upon entry was that only small furniture would fit.

This Before picture shows the homeowner's furniture. Sweet but a bit too small.

This After picture shows the owner's table from another room, with our mirror and one large contemporary accessory. Now the foyer actually feels much bigger and has a grander scale. Proportion: a key component in staging a home!

That looks so much better, Peg.  And you're right, the use of a larger mirror creates more visual space.

Peg,

This is a great illustration of proper scale making an area seem more "important" and your mirror is perfect!  I'll bet your clients were so happy with the transformation.

Thanks for the feedback Kathy and Maureen: the homeowners reaction when she saw the finished house was: "I want to buy this house!"

Very nice and much better.  I think it actually makes the room look bigger.  Great job.

Things they just don't get about SCALE! You re-do looks so much better and the bigger mirror will bring more light into the room.

Great illustration Peg!  I have run across this situation many times too.  I am guessing your sellers were surprised that switching out the original set with larger scale pieces made the space feel bigger.

I bet your home sellers knew that something wasn't "quite right" about that area -- that's why they needed your eye!  Love the round mirror and round lines of the table too -- wonderful work and such a great first impression!

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. Upon the reveal of the staged home, the homeowner really zeroed in on this mirror! She wanted to know where we bought it, so she can buy one for her next home. Alas, I think the store is all out of them. But perhaps she can find a similar one (of similar proportions!) somewhere else.

Peg - You know you've done your job well when the homeowner falls in love with their house again. I'm sure buyers will have the same reaction. I like the round mirror too - it really adds some curves to that little boxy space!

What a great example, Peg, of the importance of scale in staging.  We often see when staging occupied homes that people have oversized furniture in a space that is really too small to accomodate it.
