Good Ol' Papa Hemingway will forgive me using the title of one his books which took place in Paris in the roaring twenties.
Lovers Key does not have anything to do with Paris but for the fact that once you have seen it you want to come back. It has been over six months since I went to explore the natural recreational state park and its 712 acres.
They have since added an attractive wooden bridge from Black island to
Lovers Key itself which is a relief as the walk used to be a bit on the mock side and last time I carried my wife on my shoulders. Now its easy to reach Lovers Key and enjoy the white sand and the view towards big Carlos Bay.It is located at the very
south end of
Fort Myers Beach. One may take advantage of the 5 miles hiking or biking paths ( where I first went by mistake and realized I didn't want to walk that much that day and rather swim!), canoe ramps north of Black island just after the entrance, use a boat ramp on the other side of Estero Boulevard as the preserve expends on both side of the road, or fish along the L shaped Lovers key, swim or picnic at the north of it.It is a glorious preserve and a feast
feast for the eyes.It is an exciting time from march to august as the birds are making their nest along the beaches and humans should be cautious not to disturb their nest as the parents may leave their nests. You may find bald eagles, dolphins, manatees, herons, different types of egrets, spoonbills, osprey, gulls, butterflies, gophers, owls and many more as jays and loons ( remember the loons in Golden Pounds?) and gator's. On the other side are also a few condos which bare the same name but I am glad to say they are build away from this gorgeous preserve.
Lovers Key is a tremendous testimony to the state and the county's effort to preserve and realize the importance of protecting certain key areas in this great region of
South West Florida along the Gulf of Mexico and above all its rich wild life.
One may as told before use a kayak or canoe as in the many canals and just soak it all in as shown below .I think I will bring my bike next time or drive further down to Dog's Beach and bring my assistant Miss Red, our Rhodesian ridge back. I hope her social behavior has improved.
