Child Safety Always...

By
Real Estate Agent with Fathom Realty Washington LLC

Have you had a problem lately with clients flying in without the proper child car seats? It is not so much the fine or ticket to me as it is the child safety and insurance ramifications if something should occur.

Under our seat belt laws, I have to pay for client's under 16 who are not wearing their seat belts. This is a moving violation. My car doesn't move without every seat belt being fastened.

Supplying child car seats is a huge responsibility. If the client doesn't have one, I will furnish one because the law requires it.

 The car seat I furnish;

  • Is less than a year old.
  • I make sure it is cleaned by me after each use.
  • The straps are inspected for cuts or frays after every use.

Client safety is essential to me and I'm sure to you. How do you handle this dilemma...

Paul:  There is another answer.  What do you think you have a trunk for ?  Just install a light, and some source of liquid to drink, and a pillow.  The kids and their video games will not complain, and even if they did... you couldn't hear them !  <smile>

We simply do not put children in our car --- their parents drive their own vehicle and they take them if needed. But we encourage that children not be brought -- the parents simply can't pay attention to the homes if they are so distracted. Our 2 cents.

I do not put kids into my car. They follow me around to houses. I explain to the client it is for their safety and the clients completely understand. I do not want to assume the responsibility. Great post

Paul, This is certainly above and beyond. I'm not sure I would take on the additional risk. Rich

Safety first, people always...

Anyways, seems that based on the comments, that most professionals avoid the potential risk issues and have clients with children follow them.  Why don't you?

I'm personally not a huge fan of having a convoy.  I find, that the time between homes provides a real value in terms of building a relationships with clients.

Darren, When people come from out of town, they don't know the area. Hence having a captive audience helps me learn more about them and lets me show them the area. The convoy gives them no opportunity to ask questions. These people often stumble into a new construction site which requires registration...
