SEO Tip: Don't Waste Your Time Getting Backlinks from Crappy Directory Sites

Most people know that getting non-reciprocal backlinks to your site should be a key component to your SERP (Search Engine Results Page) ranking.   So many of us go out and try to get as many links as possible, often times trying to get links in one of the thousands upon thousands of crappy directory sites out there.

At best, links from the crappy directories has no impact on your ranking.   At worst, you could actually get penalized if you have a lot of these links, acquired them in a short period of time and/or don't have many quality backlinks.

So why is this?   Aren't all non-reciprocal backlinks good?  No, definitely not!  Think about it.   Who links to you is like an endorsement.  If you get a backlink (endorsement) from a good, trustworthy site, like your regional newspaper's website, or the chamber of commerce, this is a good endorsement.   It's like getting the endorsement from the Pope for your political campaign.   Well, maybe I'm getting carried away, but you get the point.

Conversely, getting an endorsement by a bunch of crappy sites (the Web's tenderloin) is like getting an endorsement from Vanilla Ice (remember him?).

Bottom line, save yourself some time and don't bother with these sites.   Instead, focus on developing great content, that's relevant to your readers, and you will achieve linkage organically.  And, that's what Google likes to see!

P.S.   I should add...I don't mean ALL directory sites.   Just the crappy one's with 0 page rank from Google.  Directories like Yahoo, DMOZ, industry associations, etc. are great and are treated as such!
