Look Before You Tweet...

By
Home Inspector with Complete Home Inspections, Inc. TN Lic#050
Twitter is one of the hottest new social media sensations out there, but like any of the social medias, is it just another tool that is being used, misused and abused by the masses? Now, I'll be the first to admit that I do not know all the ins and outs of Twitterdom like some folks, but get real... who really gives a rats hiney if you are 'desperate and dateless in Denver'? I don't. Me thinks it's not only a$$inine, but it might be time to lay off the Twinkies and get some self esteem for Pete's Sake!!! Give me some content I can grasp! Not wimpy stuff like, "I'm off to bed, Nighty Night..." Gag me with a spoon...

I do get the Twitter updates, just to see who is following me and IF I want to follow them. However; after clicking on their link, I find that a surprising number of folks have had their account suspended due to 'strange activity'. How strange! Too much spam or shameless self promotion I reckon. Another scenario is the person who is following 1500 folks and only has two followers and one update which is generally two year old gibberish. Now there's a hot clue for you. Do I want to follow this person? I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count!

Now, I am not ragging on Twitter or the folks who use it properly to market themselves or their businesses. Like ActiveRain, it is a social media that if used properly can enhance your presence on the internet. Keep in mind, that bad content can be optimized just as easily as good content. If you want to folks to use you as a service provider, put out quality content - something they can sink their teeth into. Remember, the search engines have a long memory. And, gibberish that you post today will be there lo-o-ong after you hit the enter key.

So look before you Tweet. Your potential customers just might be reading what you are thoughtlessly chirping about. Do they really care if you are taking a potty break at two in the afternoon? I think not... Give them something good content to read and tie it into your ActiveRain blog. It just might pay off handsomely in the long run. But then, this is just my 2¢'s worth. What do I know, I'm just a dumb ol' home inspector...

Y'all have a G-r-r-r-reat Day... ;-)

Good points Michael! I have consciously decided not to put my personal twitter feed "out there" as the fun I have had with it over the last two years is really not intended to "get clients". If and when I do try to "monetize" twitter (and I am hearing some interesting ideas from Dustin Luther) it will be a separate feed and it will NOT be auto updated!

Hi Michael:

I know it's another social media and I am a subscriber...

But honestly, I just don't have the time.

Suspended for strange activity, I thought twittering was strange activity to begin with! I can't even keep up with Facebook right now, much less twitter.

I think no one really knows exactly how to get a hold on Twitter. Most don't even know what the concept behind it is. I think as it grows it will be a useful tool, except it is often time consuming to keep up with. I have setup my twitter feed on my blog, website, and facebook status, so I can make one update and it updates all 3.

Michael, I kind of think that if a 3rd grader can Tweet, then it's most likely a passing fad much like MySpace has become and not a very effective marketing tool.

While I do have my ActiveRain blogs post there automatically, and I've joined the Twitter Business Directory, I haven't really gotten the whole Twitter concept down as to how it can promote my business.

Perhaps as it evolves, much like ActiveRain has, it'll become a better tool in my marketing chest. But for now, I just don't get it.

"Nighty night. Going to bed now."!!!!

Well Michael, after reading every body's comments on not grasping the tweet concept, I feel good this morning about not understanding twitter. WOW

I think I'm just too wordy.  140 characters (words?)... feels like a noose.

Michael - I haven't spent much time on twitter lately. I've been busy with other things.

I agree, you really have to be careful as far as to what you are writing and posting about. If you have to question yourself as to whether the material is appropriate, I would suggest not posting it.

Michael, great points!!  I'm new to Twitter myself and have noticed a lot of gobbly de gook on Twitter, but there are some good newsworthy tweets too, but it's hard to wade through all the trash.  I'm still learning about the ins and outs of it though.  I think it has the potential to be good.

As you know, I am a TOTAL Twitter fan, and engage with others there every day. The most important aspect, for me, is EVERTHING I HAVE LEARNED, and continue to learn, on Twitter. Yes, some people are clueless, but that is true no matter where you go. All you have to do is unfollow them on Twitter. Not difficult at all. Twitter isn't for everyone, but if I had to pick only 1 spot... it would be on Twitter. I hasten to say that Twitter is not about selling yourself.

Hi Micheal..Some Great points on Twittering & Tweeting, I just read tweets that interests me, most of the time I have something to contribute, and Yes Folks are watching, so be mindful what you say or rant about.

Cheers, I just followed you, thanks for sharing your thoughts on Twiiter use :O)

I am not grasping it either Micael.  Maybe it is just for a certain personality type.  I stopped auto Tweeting when I post because someone complained that that was all I was doing.  Maybe I will restrat the auto and see what happens.

Hi Michael,

Like others here, I use it to post to my website and Facebook.  Funny, I had someone start to follow me today.  One of his tweets was that he just listed his house (in my community) and hopes the market isn't as dead as people say.  Huh????

First of all the market here isn't dead.  Hopefully his agent didn't tell him that.  Also did he add me to try to take notice of his house and try to sell it?  Will we see FSBO's using Twitter to try to sell privately?

Eee gads will this be the end of REALTORS????? lol

Hi Michael

I am baffled at how much time some of these Tweeters put into tweeting!  Some it seems from the moment they wake until they go to be have something to say - all day!  When do they work?  I read more than I Tweet.  Personally, I like this site and Facebook better.  This site for business networking, Facebook for keeping in touch with family and friends.  I check in the morning, at lunch and in the evening if I have nothing else to do.  I am the first to admit that this is addiciting and I would be guilty of it if I didn't force myself to work, but  - I force myself to work!  It is how I get paid!
