If you're someone who boards a horse and is thinking about moving in the Lancaster, PA area this article is for you. Unsure what to do about finding a place to board your horse? Are you wondering what the available options are for horse owners in Lancaster and the surrounding areas? Are you considering buying a property that will allow you to keep your horses at home? If so, you may find the information below helpful about Lancaster PA horse farms. Coldwell Banker Select Professionals is committed to helping you find the home of your dreams as well as the perfect place to keep your horse.
When searching for a stable, there are many important details to consider aside from price and location. To make an informed choice, you need to investigate the atmosphere, turnout, amenities, and level of care at each boarding facility. There are so many options-from full care to self care-that you need to know before you begin your search what is important to you.
You can expect to spend anywhere from $150-$1000/month on board, depending on what is most important to you and your horse. On the low end of this price scale are self-care facilities where you are required to provide for all the daily needs of your horse (feeding, mucking, turnout, grooming, farrier, dentist, and vet.) Many times you are only renting a place to keep your horse-the rest is up to you, which includes providing all your own grain, bedding, and hay.
At full care facilities, the staff will provide for the daily care of your horse, which should include at least twice daily feedings of hay and grain, turnout, and mucking. You still have to provide regular farrier care, dentistry, and veterinary care yourself, but can often coordinate such services with other boarders. You will find many farms that provide other services in their full care price-such as administering medicine/supplements, blanketing, deworming, fly spray/mask application, and even exercising your horse or giving you lessons. It is important to determine what you can and cannot live without.
When visiting barns, it is crucial to pay attention to the atmosphere. Does it fit your personality and riding preference? Are you looking for a kid-friendly barn or one that has a more mature feel? Are the people working there competent and friendly-do they treat other people and horses with kindness and respect? Does the barn impress you as a comfortable, well-ventilated, and clean place for your horse? Taking careful notes about all these details is important. If you schedule visits with a number of boarding facilities, you will be grateful for the notes when you sit down to make a final decision.
There are some additional things to consider such as whether or not there is an indoor arena. While an indoor is exceptionally nice when the weather is poor, it will add significantly to your cost. You may feel you need an indoor but find the added cost unattractive. You'll be happy to know there are many high quality facilities that have lots of trails or maybe even an outdoor ring. They will be more economical than a place with an indoor.
Also, you want to make sure the pastures and fencing are horse safe and well-maintained and that the horses are getting turned out on a daily basis. Make sure the stalls have rubber mats or are well bedded and have fresh water. Make sure they feed quality hay, maintain their riding surfaces, and responsibly dispose of soiled bedding. Ensure there is a place to bathe your horse and that the tackroom is spacious and organized-whether or not you want a hot/cold washstall or a temperature controlled tackroom is up to you.
While there are other things to consider when looking for boarding, this information will get you started. Good luck on your search for Lancaster PA horse farms, and remember, Coldwell Banker Select Professionals is here to help!
