caught between the devil and the deep blue sea...

Alan May, Evanston Real EstateOkay... I'm one of those guys who likes to know what phrases like those mean.  Are you stuck between Beelzebub, and the ocean... and what does the devil have to do with all that water?

The "Devil" is a nautical term... describing the very, very narrow plank along the outer edge of a sailing ship.  The Devil was often used by sailors as "footing" to walk along carefully... (as it was only inches wide)... hugging the side of the ship... in order to make repairs to the ship... or fill in gaps in the wood with pitch or caulking of other kinds.

Thereby a sailor who found himself in a precarious position, would NOT find himself talking to Satan, but rather walking a narrow plank, on the side of the ship... (a dangerous position)... and nothing between him and the deep blue.  A simple slip, might find him taking the neverending dip.

Aren't you glad you asked?  Oh, wait... you didn't ask, did you?  Never mind.

I'm always curious about strange phrases as well. However, with a complete lack of ability to swim, I doubt I'll ever find myself in this situation.

ain't nobody got me on the devil, Roy.

JL - I'll have some more "origins of idioms and strange phrases" coming...
interestingly enough... filing cracks with tar is sometimes called "paying".... so there may be something to the phrase "there may be the devil to pay".

I had not heard that in a long time and I surely never knew what it meant.  I used to hate reading sailing books because I didn't under stand the lingo....like starboard, etc.  You may be able to educate me.  I love the no-blue background!!!

Susan - I'm glad you liked it.

Richard - good to know where it came from.  It shore is purty.

Barbara - Starboard and Port are easy.... and I assure you you'll never forget them again.  P-O-R-T = 4 letters.... L-E-F-T = 4 letters.

Alan, I love your musings.  Your mind goes all over the place and today it went for a cruise.  Did you at least get a fancy frozen drink with an umbrella?

Alan Elvis, it just dawned on me that this must be similar to "being caught between a rock and a hard place!"  Now that is easy to unnerstand, probly suthern, and you don't have to have any nautical nolege.....
