Why should your website be easy to navigate?

Last week I received compliments that were passed onto me from two of my clients.  Since the compliments were essentially the same, and my favorite to receive, I wanted to share them with you.  "Not only is your site beautiful, but it is easy to navigate."  The sites are: www.sphereeffect.com and www.serendipityjewels.net.

I work very hard on this step of the creation process.  Why?  Because I think it's one of the most important components to a successful website.  We are marketing to people with a wide range of internet experience.  I believe a visitor to your site should be able to get to any page on the site from any page on the site.  I think that if you make it to hard for people to find things, they leave.  We have to realize that many people have short attention spans when it comes to browsing the internet. We can create a site that is clever and beautiful, but if we cannot keep a visitor to explore the content we have not created a successful site.

One thing I like to do is get a clear idea of ALL content that is going to be included on the site so I can create a coherent "map" or flow chart.  If this structure is in place before you begin on design, it makes everything flow better once you get to the content phase.  Keeping the content flow in mind during the creation process keeps things from getting muddled down the line.

The steps in a website creation process for me are:

  1. Content flow
  2. Design to client's satisfaction (look and feel of site)
  3. Add all content
  4. Test the site to make sure all links and elements are functioning
  5. Launch the site

While working on Step 1 I often have a client say, "Can't we just decide this later?"  I can't stress enough that completing this step first makes the rest of the process flow more smoothly and creates a more successful end result.

A web site easy to navigate? absolutely! gone are the days when agents had a padlock that said "register here" before they let the viewer inside their wonderful web page... most of us are gone by the time the little window asking for personal information finishes setting up in the screen. I have seen your work and one day soon I'll knock on YOUR door. Thank you for sharing

Nice post, Chris.  You shared great info.  Sometimes we want to be to flashy forgetting the value of simplicity.

Chris, You are a true blessing for me to have meet. We have never advertised in over 25 yrs in business. Our work was always word of mouth which we still feel its the best way to build clients. We are finally playing catch up with this new century and gave in and said lets get a website. We are so happy to have meet you on her and asked you to build our first website. I can't tell you how happy we are with it and all the options you gave us and worked with options we just wanted for example our slideshows and guest book. What I appreciate and love about you is business is never over once the web  site is complete. You continue to help us with any questions we have and changes we have.  We have no regrets and continue to appreciate and enjoy contact with you on a daily bases just to say hi. I need a dose of Chris every day. One day Chris we will meet.

Hello Antonio - I remember those days!  I even urge my clients, if they insist on a contact form, to please also include an email address and phone number so people who are uncomfortable filling out forms can still call them.  We don't all want to fill in all the blanks!  : )  I look forward to working with you someday.

Karen - Thank you.  Sometimes we do get too worried about the look and forget about the function.

Kate and Shirley - Thank you so much!

Elaine - That is a wonderful endorsement, thank you.  I am happy to have met you too, I know someday we will meet in person.  It's also great to have a new friend who is also a friend to animals!

Chris, that is why you do such a great job. You know what to tackle first in order to design the site just the way the client wants it. Those sites are definitely impressive.

Chris, wow so that's what you do!!!  Kidding.  I don't care how you do it, but it's nice to know you know HOW to do it.  It makes my job easier because I don't have to worry about it, it just gets done, that's my favorite part.  Thanks hon...good work.

Chris, you do a beautiful job and at the same time, you do it professionally, quickly and with a good dose of fun added in... what more could anyone ask for in any service provider?  Nothing, that's what...  Hope you had fun at the comedy club the other night!
