It's Your Blog, Write What You Want, REALLY!

By
Real Estate Agent

I bet you're already saying, "Of course it's my blog, Roger, what do you mean?"

My initial title for this was going to be Do You Know Who Your Blog Readers Are.  My main point was that if you're trying get local people to read your blog posts, you're going to want to write some pretty hyper-local posts.  If you're doing that, then you can't expect to get too much attention from other AR users and/or the AR staff, or fulfilling that 'dream' of a featured post.  You don't want to be writing about cats if you're trying to get the mice to read it (unless, of course, it's how to avoid them!)

But then I thought better of it because I don't think that's entirely accurate, either.  I think a lot of new bloggers (and some old ones, too) fall into the trap of writing on one subject only, and the truth is it's your blog, you can write about whatever you want!

As real estate agents, most start out wanting to write only about real estate and real estate related topics, the more local, the better.  The problem with that is two-fold, in my opinion.

First, there is really only so much that can be written about real estate, and if you're trying to stick solely to that, you'll run out FAST (even quicker with only hyper-local stuff).  Sure, you could post weekly market reports, but that's not going to win many readers.  Posting listing after listing isn't going to better the blog, either.

Second, instead of trying to know who your readers are, it may be more important to learn why they are THERE (and yes, there is a difference).  Yes, some readers will come to your blog because of a listing or market report, but they'll come BACK because they want to know about YOU.  Yep, you.

If all you're writing about is dry real estate this and real estate that, not only will you run out of blog topics pretty fast, your blog will get stale to your readers pretty fast, too.  It will quickly become a "no-reader" if all you're doing is posting listing after listing or only market reports.

Throw a little bit of YOU into every post that you do.  Personalize your blog.  Potential clients read blogs to find out about the agent (or person).  To get to "know" you so to speak.  You have to write things from Your head, from your heart, and in your own style, in order for them to get to do that.

So don't be afraid to branch out a little.  Expand your horizons and your client base, too!

BTW, the font was a test of the online html editor that Tim "The Video Agent Guy" Maitski blogged about.  And all I did was copy and paste RIGHT into the WYSIWYG editor!  Cool!

thank you thank you for this blog. Sad to say I feel enough people already write about real estate. I own a hair salon also and I am thinking I would get a lot more exposure when writing about all the areas of being or trying to be gorgeous. You just helped me ALOT! thank you

I write about a little bit of everything.  If it is localism, then all the better, but mainly I just write what I have on my mind which sometimes does not pertain to Real Estate.  Thankfully those on AR allow for my wistful thoughts.

Roger... you almost lost me when you said "cat" but I hung in there (see I posted a video earlier of my CATS). Then I thought about it; he isn't talking about me, because I certainly don't JUST write about Real Estate (YAWN).  I think you're right: Throw in a little bit about YOU, so your readers/followers can SEE your personality. I THINK that is why our readers come back for more. They KNOW us.

Doug, write about what you love and people will come to you for what you do.  Come visit some time.

Nannette, mostly agents, mostly real estate.  You're right.  Hope it helped to push you pass "all real estate, all the time" phase of blogging.

Dedra, you're welcome.  I think when you find your "voice" (if you ever really do that!), your audience will 'identify' themselves by coming back to read about you.

Hey Tim and Pam (sorry, I didn't know who was commenting), I think writing about what's own your mind is the best thing to do.

Hmmm, maybe I need to rethink the whole cat thing.  I almost confused 2 cat-loving readers!  I think you're right, Kat.  Thanks for reading.

Roger,  I like the font.  It's light hearted and easy to read.

What topics you choose to write about depends on what your purpose is and who you want to attract.  My ActiveRain blog is more of a creative outlet for myself.  I write about what interests me.  Real estate, technology, politics.  It's probably not the right mix for business since I haven't had any closed business from it. Fortunately I get a lot of leads from my main website.

Roger- Right on! I am the top 3 most subscribed to blogger on AR but I also have a huge world wide readership. That is because I am me, you get what you get! I walk my talk and pay it forward. The biggest attribution to my success online is my transparency. We went on a $3 million dollar listing appt that we got from our expired mailing- they said they were going to interview 3 other agents- after they went online to read my blog- they cancelled all the other appts and called us back the next day to list their home. The reason- because I stand up for my beliefs, which happen to be the same as theirs, so they connected on a deep personal level which created trust and then they felt they knew me and then they liked me.

I rarely write a market report but I can bet you that a good percentage of our homeschoolers in our community list with us. We were getting 4 listings a week from March 2008 to November 2008 JUST FROM MY ACTIVE RAIN BLOG! Now that number has gone down because most people are trying to loan mod first so the calls are now down to 2 listings a week.

But I could not ask for a better result anywhere else, I don't have to leave my home to work, get to stay in my pjs and loving every minute of it and life! Katerina

What a wonderful post, thanks, Roger!  Sometimes I tend to get stuck on one "track" and become so focused on an end-result that I completely loose sight of what's right there beside me.  I've found that sometimes you do need to just drop your guard for a while in order to rebalance.  I'll try to do that more.

Excellent post, feature consideration. It is important though to have a target audience in mind when you write. And it is too easy to write to the AR audience in response to the comments. For most of us our target audience is local.

Tim, I used the font as a test of the online html editor, but it is kinda cool.  Btw, notice I copied and pasted straight to the WYSIWYG editor, too.  That was neat.

Thanks, Katerina.  You get what you get.  I like that! And yours is all good.

Thanks, Sandy.

Kellie, sometimes we all get stuck on something.  Just be yourself and it'll all come out great!

Richard, true, our 'target audience' as agents, is usually local, but even writing to the AR audience from time to time can get you strong local results.  I think Katerina (above) is a prime example of how writing for one nets you BOTH!

For so many Realtors, blogging is all too mysterious.  They think that in order to blog one must have something very profound to say.  But the truth of the matter is that blogging can be very "conversational".  I tell new bloggers in my office to just pretend they're talking to one of their colleagues, relating an experience from their typical workday.  It makes it a bit easier to feel comfortable and get started on regular blog contributions.

Renee, it's all about getting 'yourself' out there.

Tom, you'll right.  Many new bloggers think that it really has to be something "special."  I really like your approach, too.  It hits more to the 'golden' days of blogging when the concept was more of  a diary/journal type thing that trying to write "profound" articles.  Thanks.

Roger - I like the message... Market reports and listings can be part of a blog.  However, to attract readers, you have to do more.  It should match your personal style and should tell a personal story.  It should focus on giving instead of telling.  It also has alot to do with topic selection.  An tired topic with a new twist is better than a tired topic that has been written over and over.  Good, original content gets the most attention.
